Dubbed 'Manx Grand Prix' in 1939, what would become the best-known racing motorcycle of all time had become simply 'Manx' when production resumed in 1946, though only the presence of Roadholder telescopic front forks distinguished the post-war bike from the '39 version. The first significant change in engine specification occurred in 1949 when a works-type double-overhead-camshaft cylinder head was adopted, but the major development was the arrival for 1951 of the Featherbed frame. The cycle parts remained essentially unchanged from then on, apart from the adoption of a double-sided, twin-leading-shoe front brake for 1962. Manx engine development continued steadily until production ceased at the end of '62, the most significant design change being the adoption of 'square' bore and stroke dimensions for 1954 and coarser-pitch bevel teeth in 1957.
The Norton Manx is one of the great icons of motorcycle racing, famed for its performance, handling, and enduring success on circuits and road courses alike. This 1961 example is a matching-numbers machine that retains a wonderful patina, clearly reflecting its long and genuine competition and parading history.
This Manx was purchased by our vendor in 2012 and is offered today from his important private collection (purchase invoice on file). Barry Strickland, the Norton Owners Club's Camshaft Singles expert, confirms it is one of the very last made. The machine was completed on 14th January 1963 as a Model 11M, shop engine number 'WM58', gearbox number 'MX1547', and was supplied to the Gammon & Martin dealership in Rhodesia.
Specification highlights include:
BTH magneto
Gearbox stamped 'MX1547' (original)
Hagon shock absorbers
Akront 19" wheel rims
Sticker to front mudguard reading 'Phil Kettle Tuned'
Detailed workshop notes on file record a rebuild completed on 14th March 1985, including a fully machined cylinder head (after welding), new valve guides and seats, Cosworth piston, and Lucas 2MTT magneto. The notes further confirm the engine was checked again on 29th August 1985 for 'Paul Rickard' (possibly referencing the Paul Ricard circuit). Subsequent use is evidenced by numerous scrutineers' stickers and tags, including:
VMCC Festival of 1,000 Bikes (2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013)
Manx Grand Prix scrutineers' sticker
Isle of Man Closed Road Parade sticker (number '11')
