The first major revision of Kawasaki's trend-setting Z1/Z900 arrived for 1977 in the form of the Z1000, which, as its name suggests, was a bored-out version of the original double-overhead-cam four. Power went up - marginally - to 83bhp while there was more torque delivered further down the rev range than before. Testing the new Z1000 in February 1977, Bike magazine had to contend with a wet track but nevertheless recorded a 12.76-second standing quarter mile time, despite an enforced half-throttle take-off, and a staggering terminal velocity of 117mph with rider normally seated! A much-revised frame meant that the Z1000 had lost some of its predecessors' wayward handling while remaining every bit as refined.
This J2 model was first registered on 14th October 1982 and had had five former keepers, one of whom was Mr Steven Thompson of Thirsk, who purchased it in 1985 at around 20,000 miles. In June 1996 Mr Thompson sold the Kawasaki to the immediately preceding owner, Mr Andrew Marshall of East Yorkshire, when the recorded mileage had risen to some 33,000. The Kawasaki was laid up in 1998.
Retrieved in late 2013, the machine was in need of a total engine rebuild (see related invoices on file). Work continued into 2014 with the frame being powder coated; the tinware painted in a USA colour scheme; and a new Eddie Lawson Replica seat and Vance & Hines exhaust system fitted. Only some 1,000 miles had been covered post-restoration when the Kawasaki was purchased by our vendor at a UK auction in 2021. When the last MoT was issued in June 2020 the recorded mileage was 36,336.
Very nicely presented and said to be very fast, this exciting Japanese classic is offered with a substantial history file containing current and previous V5Cs; the 1996 sales receipt; old tax discs and MoTs; an HPI report; and the aforementioned quantity of receipts. It should be noted that despite running well on a recent outing the machine is presently running on three cylinders; recommissioning will be required and thus the machine is sold strictly as viewed.
