The first of these, the 250cc two-stroke twin-cylinder TD1, appeared in 1963. Not without flaws – it was still close to its road-going roots – it was rapidly superseded by the TD1B in 1965, with revised timing and improved reliability. Success followed in abundance, Yamaha twins taking wins across the world. The final development, the TD1C of 1967–68, featured a stronger transmission and produced around 40bhp, cementing the TD series' reputation as giant slayers.
The example offered here appears largely original. The front mudguard is not fitted but is included, while the frame may have been repainted. A fibreglass fairing is fitted. The frame number, T1-270, falls within the TD1B production sequence. The engine is stamped TD1-246, however this is a restamp. Further research may clarify its origins. Offered with a copy of a maintenance manual and parts list.
Prospective buyers should please note that whilst Robert actively started and maintained his collection, all machines are offered as requiring recommissioning to a greater or lesser extent.
