The Robert Lusk Motorcycle Collection, 1967 Suzuki TR50 Racing Motorcycle

The Robert Lusk Motorcycle Collection
1967 Suzuki TR50 Racing Motorcycle
Frame no. TR5010021
Engine no. TR50-10021

Introduced in the mid-1960s, the Suzuki TR50 was the firm's production racer for the 50cc Grand Prix World Championship, offered to privateers at a time when the category was fiercely contested by the major factories. The specification included a 49cc piston-port two-stroke engine, a lightweight frame, and a six-speed gearbox, with performance figures that allowed a well-prepared example to exceed 100mph - an extraordinary speed for a "tiddler" of the period.

The machine offered here was purchased by Robert in July 2018, having previously been in the ownership of Phil Kersey of Gorleston, who had acquired it new in 1967. Kersey was an accomplished sprinter and campaigned the TR50 in period competition, achieving notable results. At the time of sale, the motorcycle was accompanied by a telex from Suzuki Japan congratulating Kersey on setting a British National Sprint Record with the machine, though this document has since been mislaid.

Kersey later went on to achieve further success in sprinting, setting both national and world records in the 125cc class aboard a Bultaco. His Suzuki TR50 represents not only a rare example of Suzuki's ultra-lightweight production racer, but also a machine with competition history in the hands of a distinguished British rider.

Prospective buyers should please note that whilst Robert actively started and maintained his collection, all machines are offered as requiring recommissioning to a greater or lesser extent.
