Matchless-Beale G50 Replica Racing Motorcycle

• Raced at the Manx Classic by John Lee-Pemberton
• Constructed with great fidelity to the AMC original

The disappointing performance of the Matchless G45 twin-cylinder racer prompted Associated Motor Cycles to develop an over-bored version of the successful AJS 7R single as its 500cc contender. Sharing many cycle parts with the 7R, the prototype G50 first ran in 1958, with production beginning the following year. Claimed to produce just over 50bhp, the G50 initially achieved modest results, though after production ceased in 1963 the model's true potential was unlocked by tuner-entrants in both Britain and the USA. Frame and suspension development—most notably by Tom Arter and Colin Seeley—helped the G50 remain competitive well into the "Japanese era," and today it remains a mainstay of the classic 500cc racing class.

That ongoing presence owes much to the availability of high-quality replicas, of which one of the earliest and best regarded is the George Beale-built G50. Constructed with great fidelity to the AMC original, Beale's replicas have kept the G50 legend alive for a new generation of riders and collectors.

The example offered here is one of George Beale's replicas, actively campaigned by Robert at a variety of events. Scrutineers' stickers confirm its participation at BMCRC Oulton Park (31 May & 1 June 2013), BMCRC Brands Hatch GP (28–29 July 2012), CRMC Snetterton (2015), Cadwell Park (2018), and Donington Park (2018). It was also raced at the Manx Classic by John Lee-Pemberton, the late Ron Lewis having prepared the engine.

Accompanying the machine is an invoice for a BRR Transmissions gearbox, notes on ignition and valve timing, and handwritten instructions for a Molnar Manx PVL ignition system.

A well-prepared and well-documented George Beale G50 replica, this machine represents an ideal entry point into classic racing's most competitive class, offering both the performance and the pedigree to be enjoyed on track or preserved as part of a collection.

Prospective buyers should please note that whilst Robert actively started and maintained his collection, all machines are offered as requiring recommissioning to a greater or lesser extent.
