The Robert Lusk Motorcycle Collection
c.1963 AJS 350cc 7R Racing Motorcycle
Frame no. 4815 (see text)
Engine no. 4815

Built from 1948 to 1963, Associated Motor Cycles' AJS 7R - universally known as the Boy Racer - was one of the most successful over-the-counter racing motorcycles of all time. Almost every British road-race star of the 1950s and '60s rode a 7R at some stage in their careers, and the model remains a major force in classic racing today. Conceived as a customer machine but also campaigned by the factory, the 7R was designed by Phil Walker and featured a chain-driven overhead camshaft reminiscent of the pre-war 'cammy' AJS singles. While initially outpaced by the Velocette KTT and Junior Manx Norton, the 7R's robust and straightforward construction made it a favourite among privateers. Its duplex loop frame and Teledraulic fork remained largely unchanged, while the engine underwent steady development, eventually producing 41bhp in short-stroke form. In 1958 AMC introduced its own gearbox, replacing the earlier Burman.
Purchased by Robert Lusk in October 2010, this example was formerly part of the Willy Marewsky Collection. The frame shows light double stamping and is also stamped TJD001A573 on the top rail beneath the tank. The engine bears the stamp 'D Storry G6 62 7R' on the front face, possibly referencing Northumbrian rider Dave Storry, who was active on a 7R in the 1980s.
In 2018 the front hub was refurbished, including the manufacture of a new iron liner and re-machining of the brake plate assembly. Receipts on file include £2,183 for parts, plus a separate invoice from Molnar Engineering for a bare G50 hub shell and associated components totalling £1,188.
Believed to date from the final year of production and presented to a good standard, the AJS carries BMCRC scrutineers' labels from various events, including: Brands Hatch (13th & 14th April 2013); Brands Indy (8th & 9th October 2016); and Pembrey (30th April & 1st May, year unknown).

Prospective buyers should please note that whilst Robert actively started and maintained his collection, all machines are offered as requiring recommissioning to a greater or lesser extent.
