The Belgian Minerva concern was among the first to offer a viable proprietary engine for motorcycles. Nominally of one horsepower, the 211cc unit was designed for attachment to the cycle's front downtube—a configuration that became known as the 'Minerva position'—and was of advanced design, employing a mechanically operated inlet valve rather than the automatic type favoured by rival manufacturers. In addition to building complete machines of its own, Minerva supplied engines to many Continental makers as well as British firms including Ariel, Matchless, Phoenix, Quadrant, Royal Enfield, and Triumph. Despite its commercial and competition successes, Minerva abandoned motorcycle manufacture after 1909 to focus on automobiles.
Purchased new from Heightons of Peterborough by Mr Frank Gilbert, this 1903 Minerva is believed to be the town's oldest mechanically-propelled vehicle. It was unused after the First World War, with the engine briefly used to drive a pump in 1928, and remained in storage for decades. Later acquired by the late Frank Serjeant, the machine was restored in 1986 and successfully participated in the Pioneer Run in 1987, 1988, and 1989.
Robert Lusk purchased the Minerva at Brooks' Beaulieu Motor Cycle World auction on 28 June 1998. The machine has remained in his careful custodianship ever since and has been actively used on commemorative events, including many Pioneer Runs and, most recently, the 2021 London to Brighton Veteran Car Run 125th Anniversary, covering the full 60-mile route from Hyde Park, London, to Madeira Drive, Brighton. The Run commemorates the original Emancipation Run of 1896, which followed the Locomotives on the Highway Act, increasing the speed limit from 4 mph to 14 mph and permitting motor vehicles on public roads without a man carrying a red flag.
The Minerva is offered in oily-rag condition, with documentation including the Sunbeam Pioneer Certificate (No. 1138, issued to Mr F. Sargeant, Peterborough), green continuation logbook dating from the 1970s, old-style V5 and V5C, and later V5C. The machine remains a historically significant Edwardian motorcycle, representing one of the earliest examples of Belgian engineering and pioneering front-downtube engine design.
Prospective buyers should please note that whilst Robert actively started and maintained his collection, all machines are offered as requiring recommissioning to a greater or lesser extent.
