c.1946 Ariel 350cc Red Hunter
Registration no. DMJ 576
Frame no. AP 1105 (see text)
Engine no. BK 151

By 1930, Ariel's Val Page-designed singles had gained a rear-mounted magneto and their distinctive timing cover, and this basic engine design would stand the company in good stead well into the post-war era. The sports versions were designated 'Red Hunter', and under Page's successor Edward Turner were developed into fast and stylish machines. In 1946 the Red Hunters became the first models to feature Ariel's new telescopic front fork, and the following year could be ordered with the optional Anstey Link plunger rear suspension. A new duplex loop frame with swinging-arm rear suspension was adopted for 1954, the 500cc VH gaining an alloy 'head at the same time (a feature the 350cc NH would not enjoy until the 1956 range was announced). Stylish sports roadsters, the much-loved Red Hunters were discontinued when production of all Ariel four-stroke models ceased in 1959.

This '350' Red Hunter was acquired by the current vendor in 2016, since when it has been used sparingly (the owner uses his Royal Enfield combination more often). Dry stored in the garage when not in use, the machine was last run in January 2025. The vendor is thinning out his collection, hence the reason for sale. The twin-port cylinder head is a modification. Offered with a V5C document. It should be noted that V5C records the frame number as 'A1105' (actual number 'AP1105') and the HPI/V5C records the year of manufacture as 1939. However both the frame and engine number prefixes appear to fit the sequence for a c.1946 Ariel. Accordingly, prospective bidders must satisfy themselves with regard to this motorcycle's year of manufacture, originality, and authenticity prior to bidding.
