Sold for £6,900 inc. premium

1914 Triumph 499cc Roadster Type C
Registration no. OA 1359
Frame no. 251591
Engine no. 32277

The first Triumph motorcycle of 1902 used a Belgian Minerva engine, but within a few years the Coventry firm - originally bicycle manufacturers - was building its own power units. By the outbreak of the Great War the marque's reputation for quality and reliability was well-established, leading to substantial orders for 'Trusty Triumphs' for British and Allied forces. The 3½hp model first appeared in 1907. Originally of 453cc, its sidevalve engine was enlarged to 476cc in 1908, and finally to 499cc in 1910 before being superseded by the 4hp (550cc) model for 1914.

An older restoration, this 1914 Triumph Roadster Type C (3-speed hub model) comes with two old RF.60 logbooks, the most recent of which shows that 'OA 1359' has been in the vendor's family's possession since June 1975. Stored for over 20 years, the machine will require recommissioning before returning to the road and thus is sold strictly as viewed (the engine turns over). Additional documentation consists of a V5C and an old MoT (1975-1976). The date of first registration recorded in the aforementioned documents is May 1921, this being shortly after the introduction of the Roads Act of 1920, which required local councils to register all vehicles at the time of licensing and to allocate a separate number to each. (Many vehicles, although in existence for several years in some cases, were only registered for the first time after the Act's passing).
