One consequence of the E-Type's lengthy development process had been a gradual increase in weight, but a good measure of the resulting loss of performance was restored in 1971 with the arrival of the final version: the Series III V12. Weighing only 80lb (36.4kg) more than the cast-iron-block, 4.2-litre XK six it superseded, the new all-alloy, 5.3-litre V12 produced 272bhp, an output sufficient for a top speed comfortably in excess of 140mph (225km/h). Furthermore, its 0-100mph (0-161km/h) time of around 16 seconds made the V12 the fastest-accelerating E-Type ever.

Its 'U' chassis number prefix indicates that this manual transmission Series 3 roadster was manufactured for the United States market. Finished in silver with blue leather interior, the car has not been restored but does benefit from a partial mechanical overhaul that included the entire braking system and the steering. while at the same time a most extensive programme of maintenance was undertaken. The accompanying history file contains various invoices, photographs and receipts arranged chronologically.

Le lent processus d'évolution de la Type E s'était entre autres traduit par une prise de poids graduelle qui avait entraîné une perte de performances, mais en 1971, on retrouva une bonne partie de celles-ci avec l'arrivée de la dernière version, la Série III V12. Son nouveau V12 tout alliage de 5,3 litres, qui ne pesait que 36,4 kg de plus que le six-cylindres XK de 4,2 litres à bloc fonte, délivrait 276 ch qui permettait à la voiture de dépasser sans difficulté les 225 km/h. En abattant le 0 à 160 km/h en seulement 16 secondes, cette voiture était ainsi la Type E de série la plus rapide jamais produite.

Le préfixe U de son numéro de châssis indique que ce roadster Série 3 à boîte manuelle fut construit pour les Etats-Unis. De couleur gris argent avec un interieur en cuir bleu, cette voiture n'a pas été restaurée mais elle a bénéficié d'une remise en état mécanique qui a entre autres porté sur la totalité de son système de freinage et sur sa direction ; au même moment, des travaux d'entretien très complets furent menés. Le dossier d'historique dont elle dispose contient différents reçus, factures et photos classés par ordre chronologique.

Buyers' Premium and Charges
Like the vast majority of auctioneers Bonhams charge a Buyer's Premium on the Hammer Price of each Lot purchased and this is subject to VAT. Some lots may also be subject to VAT on the Hammer Price and these lots will be clearly marked with a symbol (†, Ω, *) printed beside the lot number.
For Automobilia the Buyer's Premium is 28% on the first £40,000 of the hammer price; 27% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £40,001 up to and including £800,000; 21% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £800,001 up to and including £4,500,000 and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £4,500,001.
For Motor Cars and Vehicle Registration Numbers the Buyer's Premium will be 15% on the first £500,000 of the hammer price of each Lot, and 12% on the balance thereafter.
A 3rd party bidding platform fee of 4% + VAT of the Hammer Price for Buyers using the following bidding platforms will be added to the invoices of successful Buyers for auctions starting on or after 6th July 2024 – Invaluable; Live Auctioneers; The Saleroom; Lot-tissimo.
VAT at the standard rate is payable on the Buyers Premium by all Buyers, unless otherwise stated.
