Built at Poissy from 1903, Grégoire cars quickly established a deserved reputation for speed and reliability, taking part in events such as the Circuit des Ardennes, Tour de France and Coupe des Voiturettes. The company's ambitious debut range, introduced for 1904, consisted of single-, twin- and four-cylinder models of 8, 12 and 20hp respectively. Arguably the best known Grégoire of all - the 1,106cc 8hp twin - appeared within a couple of years to be followed by a four-cylinder 10hp version in 1908. Both of these L-head sidevalve engines used an 80mm bore.

This car is the 6/8hp twin-cylinder chain-drive model which debuted at the Paris Salon in December 1904, shown as a chassis only, and in the UK at the Agricultural Halls show in April 1905, offered by the sole UK agents, Osborn & Lord. It would seem that this car has always been in the UK, having been acquired by the NMM in 1973 after standing in a Gloucester orchard for at least 30 years (see file). No previous history is known. Upon recent examination there were no immediately visible signs of chassis, engine, and gearbox numbers (it is assumed that the maker's plate is missing from the front scuttle panel). However, the current valid V5C registration document lists the chassis and engine numbers as '308 15.8.1905'; it would seem reasonable to conclude that this is the car number and date of manufacture. Offered in need of complete restoration, including a new body, this early French automobile would be ideal, once finished, for events such as the VCC's 'Creepy Crawly' tours. The car comes with some photocopied marque-related literature and the aforementioned V5C document. Sold strictly as viewed.

The National Motor Museum has completed a rigorous vehicle review process prompted by its plans to significantly enhance and update displays, which was aligned with its Collections Development Policy and guided by the Museums Association Code of Ethics and Disposal Toolkit.
