THE 190E EVO II

When Mercedes-Benz introduced the W201 series in 1982 to compete in DTM, it committed a team of gifted engineers to the task. The goal was simple — to create a sporty, compact luxury sedan that could best its rivals. The 190E 2.3-16, then the 2.5-16, were results of this mission, a continued endeavor that ultimately birthed the fantastic Evolution models.

The Evolution II, in particular, was an automotive masterpiece in its time, a stunning blend of comfort, allure, and aggressive motorsport engineering. Hand-built and mechanically modern, these cars were limited to a run of only 502 units, primarily to meet the homologation requirements for the German Touring Car Championship.

Born with an aerodynamic body kit and an adjustable rear wing, the 190E Evolution II was visually distinct from others in the line. Power sprung from a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, tweaked by Cosworth to churn out 235 hp at a high 7,200 rpm, mated to a close-ratio five-speed manual transmission — impressive numbers for a small sports sedan in the 90s.

Its handling, too, was typical Mercedes-Benz — upgraded, retuned, and well above the average. Riding 10mm lower than the standard 2.5-16, the EVO II's prowess was chiefly down to a fully independent suspension system.

THE CAR OFFERED

This 1990 Mercedes-Benz 190E, VIN. WDB2010361F741313, is an absolute time-capsule, standing proudly with its original powerhouse, a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine numbered 102992 10 000446. It is mated to its matching original five-speed manual transmission, enabling it to handle the road with absolute finesse.

Delivered in an appealing Blauschwarz Metallic, a rare color that seamlessly blends the dark skies of midnight with the subtle blue hue, its untouched body panels and paintwork simply stun. Inside, the original black leather interior provides a rich complement to the exterior. Unrestored and virtually a new car, its compact cabin is preserved in immaculate condition, featuring original power front seats, rear glass with heater, headrests in the rear, air conditioning, power sunroof, and a driver's airbag.

Manufactured in June 1990, this immaculate 190E EVO II first resided in the Netherlands before finding its way into an esteemed Mercedes collection in Germany. From there, it was sold off to a well-regarded collection in the Midwest, thus keeping it in an exalted company throughout its existence.

Reminding us of its distinguished lineage and unmolested status is the detailed factory build sheet that accompanies the car, hardly a common sight in the world of classics. Yet, it is the factory-new condition and the sub-200 mileage that makes this example so special, a gem that may never surface again. Thus, it presents an opportunity to acquire what is perhaps the world's best, and certainly the world's newest 190E EVO II, an experience akin to buying one fresh off the line in 1990.

Notably, it remains untouched and devoid of any mechanical upgrades or modifications. It is essentially a brand-new car waiting patiently for years in collections, preserved so the world can marvel at its pristine, factory-right status today. It is the perfect ode to German engineering, a marvel of rarity, originality, and perfection.
