THE BMW 3.0 CSi

BMW returned to six-cylinder power for its top-of-the-range models in 1968 with the launch of the 2500 and 2800 saloons together with the stylish 2800 CS coupé. Designated 'E9', the latter was powered by the 2800 saloon's M30 engine, though its running gear had more in common with the existing, four-cylinder 2000C/CS. The 2800 CS's replacement by the similarly styled 3.0-liter CS in 1971 brought with it numerous improvements, including four-wheel disc brakes in place of the old disc/drum combination. With 180bhp on tap courtesy of its larger engine, the 3.0 CS was good for in excess of 211km/h, with even more performance on offer from the 3.0 CSi. The latter's Bosch D-Jetronic fuel-injected engine produced 200bhp, only a whisker below the maximum enjoyed by the lightweight CSL Group 2 'homologation special', affectionately known as the 'Batmobile' on account of its futuristic aerodynamic body kit, developed at Stuttgart University and used from mid-1973 onwards. Today these exciting and charismatic Grand Tourers enjoy enthusiastic following, and well-preserved examples are increasingly sought after.

THE CAR OFFERED

Completed in 1973 and delivered new in December of that year to Antwerp in Belgium, this fabulous BMW 3.0 CSi was ordered in the very rare and unique color of Sahara Beige along with the much sought after sunroof option. The car is accompanied by numerous original European registration documents confirming that the car spent a number of years in both Greece and Germany. The car eventually found its way to the Netherlands where it was acquired by marque specialist, Oldenzaal Classics B.V. Purchased by our vendor in 2024, he immediately instructed Oldenzaal Classics to conduct a bare metal restoration of the car to its original color of Sahara Beige prior to importing the car back to the US. As part of the thorough restoration, the gearbox was upgraded to a 5-speed unit as well A/C being added. Both upgrades were performed in order to maximize the cars touring ability as well as ensuring that the car was best suited to its final destination, Texas. With the restoration totaling over €162,000, this fabulous BMW 3.0 CSi is ready for its new owner to enjoy immediately. Accompanied by a BMW Classic birth certificate, confirming its original color of Sahara Beige, this European specification example would make a fabulous, on the button grand tourer.
