"A racing Ferrari with a flat-12 engine first ran at Monza in September 1964, but the BB is the first production model to make use of this engine configuration. The Boxer's flat-12 is not a detuned racing 312P or 312 B2 or B3 unit as one might think. Rather, it's closer to the traditional 60-degree, four-cam, 4.4-litre V12 but flattened out to 180 degrees. The bore and stroke are identical and many parts such as pistons, connecting rods and valvegear are interchangeable." – Road & Track.
Unquestionably one of the greatest cars Ferrari has ever built, the 365 GT4 Berlinetta Boxer debuted at the 1971 Turin Show in prototype form and commenced production in 1973 almost unaltered. An entirely new model and the first road-going Ferrari not to have a vee-configuration engine, the 356 GT4 reflected Ferrari's motor racing heritage; its 4.4-litre, four-cam, 'boxer' engine drew on experience gained from the Maranello firm's World Championship-winning, flat-12 F1 and sports-racing units and developed no less than 360bhp at 7,700rpm. Rumours abounded that the prototype Boxer had run at over 180mph, and even though the production version managed 'only' around 175mph, there can have been few disappointed customers. The mid-located engine gave near-perfect balance and ensured that the Boxer's handling matched its stupendous straight-line speed.
A combination tubular/monocoque chassis housed the mid-mounted engine/five-speed transaxle package that ingeniously placed the motor above the gearbox and final drive, thus avoiding an overly long wheelbase. The ensemble was clothed in elegant, low-slung Berlinetta coachwork by Pininfarina. The result of extensive wind tunnel testing, Pininfarina's masterpiece was assembled at Modena by Scaglietti and comprised a superstructure mixing aluminium-alloy and steel panels, complemented by matt black-finished glassfibre elements beneath the front and rear overhangs. At the time of its introduction the 365 GT4 Berlinetta Boxer was the world's fastest and most expensive car. Only 387 were constructed between 1973 and 1976 and it remains one of the most desirable and sought after of all Ferraris.
The example offered here is one of only 58 built in right-hand drive configuration out of 387 cars in total and thus one of the rarest of RHD Ferraris. Chassis number '17943' was completed on 27th May 1974 and delivered new to the UK Ferrari importers Maranello Concessionaires before being sold to H R Owen Ltd; it left the factory finished in Giallo Fly (yellow) with black Connolly leather interior trim. The car's UK registration was 'XMC 28M'.
The Ferrari was regularly serviced and maintained by Maranello Concessionaires, Modena Engineering, S&H Motorsport and E G Autokraft and later became part of the 'M' collection belonging to Dodi and Mohamed Al- Fayed. The car was repainted red and re-trimmed in beige leather with black seat inserts, and in 1989 was seen at Modena Engineering in England. At some time its registration was changed to 'ASH 68'. In June 2004 the Ferrari was offered for sale at UK auction where it was purchased by the current vendor; at that time the odometer reading was stated to be 35,788 miles.
On file is list of maintenance works undertaken by our vendor between September 2004 to October 2009, together with another list of more extensive refurbishments undertaken in August 2025, which included engine-out replacement of the cam belts, tensioners and water pump (see invoices on file). Offered with a Massini Report.
