The famous dynasty of adventure motorcycles that remains ever-popular today was created when BMW launched its now-iconic R 80 G/S in 1980. Often credited for inventing the dual-sport category - bikes equally adept at on-road and off-road performance - the first GS blended BMW's flat-twin boxer engine and the R65's frame, with longer suspension travel and larger wheels. The GS' fate was sealed after Hubert Auriol's 1981 and 1983 victories in the gruelling Paris-Dakar rally, followed up by Gaston Rahier's double in 1984-85. BMW celebrated with a special edition featuring a mammoth 32-litre expedition fuel tank, single red seat with grab rails, and bold Paris-Dakar branding in bright primary colours. It is thought that around 200 R80 G/S Paris-Dakars were built each year from 1984 until 1986 in BMW's Berlin plant, with a further 5000 conversion kits fitted through the dealer network.
This R 80 G/S Paris-Dakar was built in February 1986 and delivered by BMW dealer WüDo from Dortmund to Herr Schröder in March of that year. The WüDo oil sump pan, a fitting accessory for this fact has always been kept on the bike.

The bike was ordered from the Berlin Factory with a kick starter, crash bars with integrated side stand drop brackets and , Michelin tyres, and a side stand.

The original build sheet, confirmed via a (Geburtsurkunde) build certificate secured by the vendor from BMW confirming Frame, (matching VIN Tag), engine and gearbox are all matching the original Factory numbers.
This very limited model has the , also crucial ly includes option code 0719 'Special Edition' and colour code '999', confirming the bike as one of just 200 Paris-Dakar's built in the BMW factory in Berlin in spring 1986.
The bike is additionally fitted with the entire range of period Original BMW accessories, including saddle bags, front fork stabiliser, hard to find tachometer, clock, and side rack with both G/S panniers, and trunk rack with a leather topcase.
Included are a full set of keys for the motorcycle and its panniers and its original German registration document, its Original full on-board tool set, and the original brochures of the motorcycle.
The bike is in lovely original clean condition with several original factory markings still present. A history file includes invoices for recent extensive maintenance work, including many new parts, exhaust headers, lead-free cil head conversion, oils, filters, tyres.
From the last German TUV inspection reports, in 2017 (38.146 km), 2020 (38.180) and in 2022 (38122) and today the odometer shows 38,225km. It has only covered a mere 80 service kilometers since 2017.
This rare Paris-Dakar will be the star of any collection or could be ridden across Africa as its makers intended.
