Introduced in 1978, the Volkswagen Type 183 Iltis (polecat) was a light jeep that replaced the DKW Munga and VW Beetle-based Type 181 in German military service. Volkswagen had acquired Audi (and with it DKW, another member of the defunct Auto Union) in 1965 and its new military vehicle would be based on the Munga, incorporating the Audi 100's 1,760cc four-cylinder engine and other components. The Type 183's most important development was its new four-wheel drive transmission system, which would later form the basis for that of the Audi Quattro road car. Approximately 9,500 were built between 1978 and 1988. This Iltis is offered with Spanish registration paperwork.

La Volkswagen Type 183 Iltis (putois), présentée en 1978, était une tout-terrain légère qui remplaçait dans l'armée allemande la DKW Munga et la VW Type 181 dérivée de la Coccinelle. Volkswagen ayant racheté en 1965 Audi (et également DKW, autre membre de l'ex-Auto Union), son nouveau véhicule militaire greffait sur une base de Munga d'autres composants de l'Audi 100, dont son quatre-cylindres de 1 760 cm3.
