Austrian arms manufacturer Steyr turned carmaker after WWI, merging in 1935 with Austro-Daimler to create the Steyr-Daimler-Puch combine. Steyr did not resume production of its own cars after WWII, instead manufacturing FIATs under licence for the Austrian market. In 1957 Steyr started making the Nuova 500 but used its own horizontally opposed twin-cylinder engine in preference to the FIAT original, and this model would ultimately evolve into the 660cc 650TR II.

Le fabricant d'armes autrichien Steyr devint à l'issue de la Première Guerre mondiale un constructeur automobile qui fusionna en 1935 avec Austro-Daimler pour donner naissance au groupe Steyr-Daimler-Puch. Après la Seconde Guerre mondiale, Steyr ne cessa pas de produire ses propres modèles et assembla même des FIAT sous licence pour le marché autrichien. Il entama en 1957 la production de la Nuova 500, mais en utilisant son propre bicylindre à plat à la place du moteur FIAT d'origine ; ce modèle deviendra par la suite la 650TR II de 660 cm3.
