'Bask II' by Gianni Botsford Architects

'Bask II' by Gianni Botsford Architects

"Bask II", is an extension of last year's winning kennel. Crafted in thin layers of plywood into an elegant, curved form, "Bask II" again pays homage to the warmth and geometry of sunlight. Where last year's kennel symbolised solar geometry through curved lines representing a sun path at UK latitudes, "Bask II" is a portable form that enhances a dog's bask—an occupiable parabola, gathering warmth for a content canine, perhaps mimicking our own devotion to the sun on holiday. We think of this year's "Bask II" as a verb to last year's noun. "Bask II" is a dual-purpose and two-sided kennel. Its form is a simple parabolic dome with a dog sized hole in it. In dome mode the hole is an entrance and an occulus for sunlight to penetrate the sheltered interior of the dome. When turned upside down the entrance hole acts as a stand, a flat base to prevent the dome from wobbling and thus allows a dog to bathe in complete sunlight.
