THE PORSCHE 935
At the sixth Rennsport Reunion held at Laguna Seca Raceway in 2018, Porsche unveiled a stunning tribute to the legendary 1979 935 Longtail, known by Porschephiles as "Moby Dick." Born from necessity after the World Sportscar Championship changed to a new 3-liter formula, effectively killing the dominant 5-liter 917, Porsche regrouped and focused on developing the 911 to its highest potential. Porsche's racing department took the mild-mannered 911 road car, and gradually, methodically developed it throughout the 1970s with larger engines, lighter weight, and turbochargers until it emerged from the Weissach workshops as a 230mph, 860bhp fire-breathing monster that, in endurance-spec, claimed the top three steps of the podium at Le Mans in 1979. Beneath the 935's aggressive flares and aero addenda was the unmistakable silhouette of the Porsche 911 – and that direct link to the road car is what endeared legions of fans, cementing its legendary status.
In 2009, Ferrari paved the way for a new genre of supercar with the FXX series – singularly focused, highly exclusive cars built solely for private enthusiasts to use on track. Other manufacturers followed with their own interpretations, including the Aston Martin Vulcan, Lamborghini Essenza, McLaren P1 GTR, and even Bugatti joined the fray with the spectacular Bolide. These cars commanded a massive premium when new, and today are hugely sought-after by collectors on the rare occasions they come to market. All the while, traditionally conservative Porsche sat quietly on the sideline, preferring their homologated racing cars to do the talking on the world motorsport stage, but quietly cooking up their own entry into this exclusive segment.
Finally, in honor of Porsche's 70th Anniversary in September 2018, they revived the hallowed 935 name in a most spectacular fashion – with a limited, highly exclusive, track day special that, like its forbearer, stretched the limits of what a 911 could achieve. Completely unincumbered by restrictive road use and motorsport regulations and using the 991.2 911 GT2 RS Clubsport as a basis, the new 935 gained stunning new bodywork inspired by the original, including wide box flares, a flat-nose front-end treatment, and a massive rear diffuser and wing, all executed in lightweight carbon fiber. The shape is a breathtaking and worthy tribute to the original. The show car also featured center-lock wheels with brake-cooling turbine discs as a nod to Moby Dick and was finished in Agate Grey with the iconic Martini stripes.
Beneath the carbon skin sits a 991.2-based twin-turbocharged flat six, with variable turbine turbochargers, water-spray intake cooling, and direct injection. Displacing 3.8 liters, the engine makes a full 700 horsepower at 7,000 rpm, and a mighty 553 ft/lbs of torque available from 2,500 rpm to 5,000 rpm ensuring linear, predictable power delivery out of corners. Power hits the ground via a 7-speed PDK gearbox and is kept in check via race-derived adjustable traction control and stability management. Other racy bits include a GT3R yoke-style steering wheel, carbon Recaro seats with 6-point harnesses, comprehensive roll cage, on-board fire suppression, roof escape hatch, and on-board jacks. Porsche claimed 0-60 in 2.5 seconds and a top speed of 211mph, but the 935's true performance comes in the twists, turns, and undulations of places like Road America, Laguna Seca, or Sebring.
Porsche's Weissach race department built just 77 examples worldwide, and all were snatched up by enthusiasts nearly as quickly as the news broke of its spectacular arrival. The revived 935 stands proudly as one of Porsche's finest moments in modern history, a machine worthy of its place in the world's finest collections.
THE CAR OFFERED
The breathtaking 935 offered here is car number 16 from the limited run of 77, presented in an extremely rare matte carbon finish and with a full complement of options and spares. Sold new to a private collection, this 935 is being offered by the second owner, and has effectively covered delivery miles only (just 44 miles at the time of cataloguing) and is in pristine condition overall.
The bare carbon fiber treatment gives it a sinister appearance, particularly with the black finish center-lock alloys shod with Michelin rain tires –as if it rolled straight out of a test day at La Sarthe. This car was ordered with the $44,300 factory spares package, which includes spare bodywork and aero components. It also features the optional passenger seat and dual-zone air conditioning so you can take a friend along for the ride of a lifetime and still offer them a modicum of comfort. The consignor reports that purchase documentation and a binder of technical information will accompany the sale.
Believed to be the only Matte Carbon 935 offered for public auction, this incredible automobile is one of the most memorable Porsches of a generation and will undoubtedly go down in history as one of the ultimate, most intensely focused evolutions of the modern 911.
