Unveiled at the Geneva Salon in 1977 and voted Car of the Year for 1978, the 928 was intended as an up-market replacement for the long-running 911, but in the event Porsche's rear-engined classic would outlive its younger sibling. The front-engined 928's stylish hatchback body featured aluminium doors, bonnet, and front wings in the interests of weight saving, while ingenious impact-resistant 'bumpers' made of colour-matched plastic were incorporated into the nose and tail. The V8 engine - Porsche's first - displaced 4.5 litres and produced 234bhp. A five-speed transaxle gearbox or three-speed automatic were the transmission options. In 1979 the 928S with 4.6-litre engine arrived and then in 1986 the model was further revised and restyled, becoming the 928 S4. Its engine producing 320bhp courtesy of twin-cam, 16-valve cylinder heads and enlargement to 4,957cc, the S4 enjoyed a welcome top speed boost to 160mph. In 1989 Porsche moved the game on with the even more powerful 928 GT, which with a top speed of around 170mph (273km/h) was the Stuttgart firm's fastest production car at that time, before launching the model's ultimate incarnation: the 928 GTS.
Introduced at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1991, the latter boasted a 5.4-litre engine producing all of 345bhp. In addition, changes were made to the bodywork and there were larger front brakes. The price of a fully equipped GTS could exceed $100,000 in the USA, and this depressed sales despite the 928's favourable reputation and generous level of standard equipment. In GTS form the 928 lasted in production until the model's deletion in 1995. Porsche has not made anything like it since, and today this fast-appreciating modern classic enjoys an enthusiastic following worldwide.
This Porsche 928 GTS was delivered new by Porsche Stuttgart on 13 September 1995 to IGIP Invest Gmbh, based in Wiesbaden. With its discreet appearance underneath its shiny black paintwork, it is nonetheless quite unique given its numerous options and interior made-to-measure colourway. Its options sticker in fact lists no fewer than 31 option codes, including 20 from Porsche's Exclusive department. This 928 GTS is therefore fitted with an electric sunroof, heated electric seats, but above all with an extended lavender leather interior right to the air vents, all with specific stitching. It also boasts woodwork on the dashboard, steering wheel and gearstick, as well as a high-quality audio system with cassette storage integrated in the driver's side door, embroidered carpets, and many other rare or even unique options for a Porsche 928, such as the Nokia Sound System, the dual-zone air conditioning and the passenger reading lamps.
From 1995 to 1998, it was maintained by Porsche Stuttgart and had 34,418 km on the clock at the time of its third service in February 1998. As of 1999, the 928 was maintained by Porsche Wiesbaden until 2004, when the current and third owner acquired the car. Thereafter registered in France, the car continued to be regularly maintained by Porsche, mostly by Porsche Classic Rouen. In 2017, its coachwork underwent work at Centre Porsche Classic Rouen, following a slight accident to the front right that required the wing to be replaced. Now with 111,300 km on the clock it has just been fully serviced by the specialist, Da Cruz Motors, who have been servicing it for several years. It is therefore in both very good working and cosmetic condition. The 928 recently had its coachwork polished in full and its seats were also cleaned, while its undercarriage was cleaned cryogenically.
This Porsche 928 GTS with its unique specifications will be sold with its full set of original documentation, a file of invoices and roadworthiness tests (contrôles techniques), and its French registration document (carte grise).
