It is said that when David Brown acquired Lagonda in 1947 all he got was a famous name, a collection of engineering drawings and a handful of prototypes. And although Lagonda's chief engineer and designer, the great W O Bentley, quit the firm when Brown took over, he left behind the 2.6-litre, six-cylinder, twin-overhead-camshaft engine that would power the Aston Martin DB2 and the next generation of Lagondas. Although it retained a separate chassis, Bentley's Lagonda was advanced in other ways, featuring a cruciform-braced frame with independent suspension all round: by double wishbones and coil-springs at the front - a layout similar to that adopted on the DB4 - and semi-trailing arms at the rear where the brakes were mounted inboard to reduce unsprung weight.

Available as a sports saloon or drophead coupé, both with coachbuilt bodies, the new Lagonda was intended to exploit a perceived gap in the luxury car market between Jaguar/Rover at one end and Rolls-Royce/Bentley at the other, and succeeded brilliantly, being able to carry five persons and their luggage at high speed and in great comfort. The interior with its leather upholstery, plentiful walnut and quality fittings stood comparison with that of the very best in the luxury car class.

This factory-bodied 2.6-litre Lagonda was originally finished in Moonbeam Grey with blue interior (as it is today), and left the Feltham factory equipped with rim embellishers, pockets to rear of front seats, adjustable footrest, rear seat painted as per request, and initials painted on rear doors. It also boasts a sunroof and rear window blinds. The Lagonda was delivered new in the UK to one H S Whitaker Esq and has been owned soon (from 1957) by Mr Arthur Gnehm of Lensburg, Switzerland. The current (and third) owner purchased the Lagonda in 2013. A copy of the original guarantee form is on file and the car also comes with service records from Aston Martin Lagonda and Reg Parnell dating back to 1959. Our vendor describes the Lagonda as in 'best order' (chassis, body and engine) and 'very nice' (interior and woodwork). The car comes complete with tools, jack, an original instruction book, Swiss carte grise, and a FIVA Identity Card.
