THE SILVER CLOUD II

Facing increasing competition from faster rivals and with the development of its ageing six-cylinder engine nearing its end, Rolls-Royce turned to V8 power as the 1960s approached. The V8 was, of course, favored by those in Rolls-Royce's most important export market – the USA – so it was only natural that the Crewe firm would study the best American designs, principally those of Chrysler and Cadillac, for inspiration. Introduced in the autumn of 1959, the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud II and Bentley S2 appeared externally unchanged from their 'Cloud and S-Type predecessors, though the duo's performance was considerably enhanced by the new 6,230cc aluminum-alloy V8 engine. Although wider and shorter than the 'six' it replaced, the new power unit fitted relatively easily within the engine bay, since engineers intended the Silver Cloud to have a V8 from the onset. Externally the new models appeared virtually unchanged, while beneath the skin Rolls-Royce's own four-speed automatic transmission was now the only one available and power steering was standard fitment. Immensely successful both at home and abroad, the Silver Cloud II and Bentley S2 remained in production until the autumn of 1962.

THE CAR OFFERED

According to production records provided by the Rolls-Royce Owner's Club in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, this Silver Cloud II, chassis LSVB 293, was originally finished in Velvet Green complemented by tan upholstery. The first owner is recorded as Mrs. E.M. Hyslop of Ohio, who took delivery in July 1960. The specification was comparatively standard, with notable accessories including a radio with powered aerial, electric windows, Marchal headlamps, and Firestone whitewall tires. Club ownership records show that by the 1980s, the car was in the care of Mr. Randolph Fuller of Naples, Florida, who also had a Silver Dawn in his stable. At some point in the car's history, it was refinished in its current two-tone livery of black over sand gold body sides. The cabin features swathes of cream beige leather accented by wood trim and original touches including the factory His Master's Voice radio. A moderate overall patina makes this an excellent canvas for touring preparation or refurbishment.

Since joining the current owner's extensive collection, this vehicle has been on long-term static display in a dry climate. Please note that it has not been started while in Bonhams care and will require recommissioning.
