THE SILVER CLOUD II

Catering for the stately limousine market in the 1950s, Rolls-Royce offered Phantom IV strictly to Royalty and Heads of State, and the generally available Silver Wraith for all other comers. Following the introduction of the Silver Cloud, a long-wheelbase version of this more modern design was made available, with bodies closely based on the factory's standard offering. Four inches (100mm) longer in the wheelbase than the standard saloon and usually fitted out with an internal division, these bodyshells were extended by Rolls-Royce's in-house coachbuilder Park Ward (soon to become H J Mulliner, Park Ward) at its London works and finished off at Crewe. These long-wheelbase versions of the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud and Bentley 'S' Series continued after the introduction of the new 6,230cc aluminum-alloy V8 engine on the 'Cloud II/S2 in the autumn of 1959, offering a less expensive, but hardly less exclusive, alternative to the newly introduced Phantom V. Only 258 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud II and 51 Bentley S2 long-wheelbase saloons were made before the introduction of the Silver Cloud III.

THE CAR OFFERED

Silver Cloud II chassis LCLC 22 is a rare and desirable Long Wheelbase Saloon outfitted with special equipment by Park Ward. This left-drive US-market car was delivered via the famed importer J.S. Inskip for Mr. Daniel J. O'Conner of Palm Beach, Florida. Originally finished in Midnight Blue, this car has some interesting and unusual specifications such as the division window, electric windows, extra capacity air conditioning, power assisted steering, and a complete trim in grey Hunt & Winterbottom cloth upholstery.

In the late 1990s, the car was in the care of M. Boyle of Oregon, who advertised it in the Flying Lady with 80,000 miles. It has since been repainted white but retains many authentic details including the distinctive cloth-trimmed interior. Tidy and well-presented, this elegant high-specification Silver Cloud II is now ready for its next custodian to enjoy the unique blend of elegance and grace. Please note that this vehicle has been on long-term static display in a dry climate, it has not been started while in Bonhams care, and will require recommissioning.

Saleroom notices

Please note, this model is actually a Silver Cloud I model, not a Silver Cloud II as catalogued. Also note, this vehicle comes with a 6-cylinder engine, not a V8 engine as catalogued.
