Footnotes
The late Paul Smart's victory at the 1972 Imola 200 is one of the most iconic moments in motorcycle racing history, particularly for Ducati. Smart was invited to race for Ducati almost by chance, and he was initially unsure about accepting the offer. However, his wife Maggie convinced him to take part in the race, and this decision would ultimately become legendary.
The Imola 200 was one of the most prestigious and important races at the time, modelled on the American Daytona 200. Smart was riding the Ducati 750 twin that had been specially developed for the event - the first time Ducati had entered a bike with a V-twin engine - and it was the racing model from which the Ducati 750 SuperSport (750SS) was later developed. This iconic machine remains a key part of the brand's identity even today.
Smart's win was particularly impressive, given his relative unfamiliarity with the bike, and the fact that Ducati was not yet considered a dominant player in racing at the time. His victory marked a major breakthrough for Ducati, establishing them as a serious contender in the world of motorcycle racing and beginning the company's long-standing tradition of success in twin-cylinder racing.
