1928 Raleigh 498cc Project
Registration no. RL 7918
Frame no. A5147
Engine no. A3530 (see text)

Britain's best-known and longest-lived bicycle maker, Raleigh also manufactured motorcycles from 1899 to 1905, and from 1919 to 1933. More recently, the Nottingham company offered a range of mopeds plus a scooter in the late 1950s/1960s. During the 1920s the Raleigh range expanded to include machines of a wide variety of capacities and types, ranging from a 175cc unit-construction lightweight to a hefty 998cc v-twin. Traditionally, trials had been Raleigh's favoured area of motorcycle competition, but in 1928 the firm entered the Isle of Man Senior TT with a team of new 495cc overhead-valve long-stroke singles, one of which finished eighth, a creditable first effort.

Believed to be a Model 21, this Vintage-era sidevalve Raleigh belonged to the lady vendor's late father. Kept in dry storage for some time, this incomplete machine will require restoration before returning to the road and thus is sold strictly as viewed. Prospective purchasers should satisfy themselves with regard to this motorcycle's completeness (or otherwise), originality and mechanical condition prior to bidding. The machine is offered with an old-style V5C Registration Certificate recording the engine number as 'A3533', whereas the actual number is 'A3530'.

Footnotes

All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding.
