This Mercedes-Benz 250 SL was purchased new by John Edward Markham, an attorney in the USA. His family owned the car for c.50 years, see detailed paperwork and service book up to 2019 on file.

In 2020 the car was purchased by Mr Tony Sharp of Lapworth and imported into the UK. Mr Lapworth intended to restore it himself but his other Mercedes-Benz SL took up all his time. He then sold the vehicle to our vendor in August 2021. In 2023 classic and vintage vehicle restorers Ed Watson & Co were commissioned to completely restore the car. Commencing in June 2023 and completed in June 2024, the works included a complete bare-metal respray in Mercedes-Benz Silver. On the mechanical side, the suspension was completely rebuilt, new wheel bearings fitted, and a complete new braking system and servo, etc installed. The manual gearbox was rebuilt, new parts being fitted and the gear linkage replaced. Rebuilt in the USA in late 2017, the engine was fully serviced and retuned.

New wheels and tyres were fitted (the latter to Mercedes-Benz standard) and all exterior trim replaced. The black leather interior was refurbished, the carpets, seating and door cards, etc being restored, and the wooden dash returned to as new condition. All-in-all Ed Watson's restoration has brought this 56-year-old car back to an amazing condition externally, internally and mechanically (detailed invoices on file totalling £40,000).

Buyers' Premium and Charges
Like the vast majority of auctioneers Bonhams charge a Buyer's Premium on the Hammer Price of each Lot purchased and this is subject to VAT. Some lots may also be subject to VAT on the Hammer Price and these lots will be clearly marked with a symbol (†, Ω, *) printed beside the lot number.
For Automobilia the Buyer's Premium is 28% on the first £40,000 of the hammer price; 27% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £40,001 up to and including £800,000; 21% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £800,001 up to and including £4,500,000 and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £4,500,001.
For Motor Cars and Vehicle Registration Numbers the Buyer's Premium will be 15% on the first £500,000 of the hammer price of each Lot, and 12% on the balance thereafter.
A 3rd party bidding platform fee of 4% + VAT of the Hammer Price for Buyers using the following bidding platforms will be added to the invoices of successful Buyers for auctions starting on or after 6th July 2024 – Invaluable; Live Auctioneers; The Saleroom; Lot-tissimo.
VAT at the standard rate is payable on the Buyers Premium by all Buyers, unless otherwise stated.
