One of the most illustrious names in sports car racing history, the Lister-Jaguar, designed by Brian Lister, swept almost all before it during its first full racing season in 1957, while more recently cars bearing the Lister name have been a major force in GT racing worldwide. From the early 1980s the name has also graced some of the world's fastest road cars following an agreement, first with BLE Automotive and then WP Automotive, that saw converted XJ-S models marketed as Lister-Jaguars. With engineering input from Laurence Pearce, Lister's developments of the XJ-S included a 6.0-litre V12 engine and twin-supercharger induction. By 1995 a 'full house' Mark III conversion cost a staggering £53,505+VAT on top of the price of the donor vehicle! In unblown form, as seen here, Lister's modifications boosted maximum power to 482bhp, emphatically propelling the XJ-S into the supercar league. The suspension, brakes and wheels were upgraded accordingly and the XJ-S given an aggressive looking body kit and a luxurious Recaro leather interior. The result was an exclusive car costing a not inconsiderable £88,000 in 1988. Approximately 90 Lister Jaguar XJ-Ss were built.

Our vendor purchased this Lister Jaguar at a UK auction in May 2013, at which time it was said to have led a very pampered life and be structurally sound. The mileage at that time (just over 80,000 miles) was stated to be genuine and supported by various bills and paperwork. While in the previous owner's care the XJ-S was invited to the Goodwood Festival of Speed in 2003, appearing on a stand of ultimate road cars alongside Nick Mason's Ferrari F40 and Jay Kay's BMW 2002 Tii.
In 2017 the car was stripped as a rolling restoration. The bodywork was stripped back to bare metal and any rust removed and replaced with fresh metal, while the Parchment leather interior was removed and reupholstered. The engine was stripped of its ancillaries, cleaned and fully detailed (but not rebuilt) and has been fully serviced. All running gear was restored with new bushes, bearings, etc, and the car resprayed in metallic blue. Included in the sale is a service book, a V5C document, a current MoT certificate, some magazine articles about the car, and the original delivery folder containing service documentation accumulated over the years.

Saleroom notices

We are pleased to note that during the 2017 restoration, the engine was stripped and rebuilt contrary to the printed and online catalogue.
