THE BENTLEY CONTINENTAL SC

One of the more exclusive limited-edition variants of the already exclusive Continental R was the Continental SC, its name referencing the exotic Sedanca Coupé bodied Bentleys of the 1930s, noted for their open driver's compartment design. Launched at the 1998 Paris Show, the Continental SC was based on the short-wheelbase, wide-body Continental T, and featured a Targa-style removable roof, the glass panels being stored in the boot. While its restrained elegance suggests docility, the Continental SC is not lacking in performance, as Octane discovered when it drove one to the Villa d'Este concours in hot pursuit of a trio of supercars (October 2014 edition). "The SC may be massive, but it obviously isn't so massive that 400-odd horses can't give it genuinely impressive punch. The eerie part though, is the absolute silence." Clearly, the SC's designers had not lost sight of Bentley's reputation as 'The Silent Sports Car'.

Highly exclusive when new, Bentley produced just 48 left-hand drive SCs, from a total production run of 73 units. It was priced accordingly, topping an eye-watering $360,000 with ease. Undoubtedly one of the more flamboyant of the late-1990s Bentley models, the Continental SC has aged remarkably well and remains a superlative driver's car with unmatched levels of opulence.

THE CAR OFFERED

This 1999 Continental SC is one of the 48 left drive examples produced, delivered new to its first owner in New York. Finished in a lovely combination of Verdant Green over Spruce leather interior, it undoubtedly makes quite a statement. With the roof in place, it is barely distinguishable from the Conti T on which it is based, but with the panels out, it takes on an altogether different character. Of particular note is this car's gorgeous interior, with beige leather upholstery on the seats and door cards, accented with a green dash, console, green carpets, and two-tone steering wheel. Along with the removable glass 'targa' top, there's also a fixed glass panel over the rear compartment, so passengers can stargaze as well.

It currently shows 19,867 miles, though it should be noted that the CARFAX report suggests a possible mileage discrepancy, at one point noting 23,000 miles, with a subsequent entry at 18,900 miles, which could be due to a typo or data-entry error. Additionally, the CARFAX indicates an accident in 2002, with no additional details given. Considering the car looks and performs as well as it does some 22 years later suggests whatever repairs were made, were done so properly.

Playing on the tradition of the great coachbuilt Bentleys of yore, the SC brings open air motoring to the Continental range without sacrificing refinement. It is indeed, 'The Silent Sports Car.'
