THE BENTLEY CONTINENTAL T

Introduced in June 1996, the Continental T was a short-wheelbase, pumped-up version of the Continental R, the latter being notable as the first Bentely not to share bodywork with Rolls-Royce since 1965. To create the edgier, more muscular T, engineers shaved some 4 inches (100mm) out of the chassis aft of the doors. With 400bhp at its disposal and crouching aggressively on tuned suspension with 18" wheels tucked into broad flared wheelarches, the low-slung Continental T looked every inch the thoroughbred Bentley sports car, the cockpit with its engine-turned dashboard recalling the heroic exploits of W.O.'s 1920s racers. The engine start button was another neat 'retro' touch, blending sporting attitude with typical Bentley opulence. Despite weighing as much as two Ford Mondeos, the luxuriously appointed Continental T delivered thumping performance, racing to 60mph in a tire-shredding 5.8 seconds on an ocean of torque, and storming to a (governor limited) top speed of 155mph. Equally as staggering was the price: $324,500 at the time of launch.

But Bentley wasn't quite done there. Continental Ts built from 1998 to the end of production in 2003 got the wick turned up to 420bhp and 650lb-ft of torque, and the speed limiter removed to allow the big T to hit 168 mph, putting it in genuine supercar territory, but with all the comfort and convenience expected of a proper Bentley.

THE CAR OFFERED

Presented as it rolled out of Crewe in an appropriately sinister shade of black over black leather trim, this 2002 Continental T is one of 217 left drive examples of the pumped-up 'Super Bentley' produced. Showing just 23,534 miles at the time of cataloguing, it is in suitably outstanding condition, with correct details including mesh grilles, chrome 18-inch wheels, and Pirelli P-Zero Asimmetrico tires. As a later example, this car benefits from the full-chat 420 horsepower engine. The ownership chain is well documented via the CARFAX report, with regular mileage entries affirming the current odometer reading. As part of the current collection of special edition Bentley V8s, this car has been well maintained and looked after with care.

Offered in excellent condition, this collector-quality Bentley has the looks, performance, and opulence to live up to the legend set by its forbearers.
