THE PORSCHE 930 TURBO 'FLACHBAU'
By combining the open 911 Cabriolet with a turbocharged engine and modified motorsport-inspired bodywork, Porsche created what is considered today to be one of the most desirable late model 911s—the 911 Turbo SE Flachbau ("Flat Nose" or "Slant Nose") Cabriolet. Group 4 homologation rules, requiring 400 road cars to be built, had spurred the development of "Project 930"—the original 911 Turbo. In October of 1974, Ernst Fuhrmann officially unveiled the first Carrera Turbo production model. The Turbo married a KKK turbocharger to a completely reworked 3.0-liter engine, in road trim a combination that delivered 260bhp for a top speed of 153mph. The Turbo's characteristic flared wheel arches and "tea tray" rear spoiler were carried over from the Carrera model, while the interior was the most luxurious yet seen in a 911. The engine was enlarged to 3.3 liters for 1978, gaining an intercooler in the process. Power increased to 300bhp (265bhp for US models) and the top speed of what was the fastest-accelerating road car of its day went up to 160mph.
The 911 Turbo's raison d'être – the 935 racing car – had pioneered a special option that would come to be known as the "slant" or "flat" nose, and this new look was soon in high demand from 911 customers. Initially, the legendary racing team and tuning shop Kremer Racing offered a conversion service to modify existing road cars with the 935-look. That was later taken up by the factory's own Customer Department for special order (Sunderwunschen) in 1981, but the race-inspired aerodynamic body work would not become an official Porsche option until 1986. For the official Porsche cars, the converted front wings were steel, incorporating cooling vents and pop-up headlamps (early examples had them in the air dam). The car's aggressive 'boxed' side skirts lead to the rear flares which had extra cooling intakes ahead of the rear wheels. Along with the body modifications came an even more luxurious full leather interior. The interior was graced with luxuries such as air conditioning and special electrically adjustable and heated Recaro seats. Production of these modified 930s remained quite low due to the very high cost that they carried, and they remain among the most coveted of all 'G-series' 911s.
THE CAR OFFERED
This left-hand drive, 'Flat Nose' Turbo Cabriolet has been in the care of just two owners, and has covered only 9,828 miles from new, noted at the time of cataloguing. Finished as it left the works in the iconic Guards Red with a full black leather interior with red piping, this ultimate 911 soft-top is surely one of the finest preserved examples of its kind, having been in the care of one fastidious owner for the past 16 years.
The consignor acquired this very special 911 from Bonhams|Cars in 2008, when it showed just 8,900 miles, then shipped the car directly to Los Angeles, where it has lived since. At that time, it had recently been registered in the UK, with ownership based in Monaco with all taxes paid in Monaco when new. Due to the taxes being paid in Monaco, it is believed that the import back to Monaco should be without taxation. It is also believed that the car was originally owned by a member of the Monegasque Royal Family, although that claim was not verified at the time of writing. This car came extremely well-equipped with options including full supple leather seats with contrasting piping, Porsche crest steering wheel, numerous leather-trimmed items, differential lock, CD player with amplifier and of course, the all-important "M505" Slant Nose body.
While in the care of the current owner, a remarkable regimen of preservation was undertaken to ensure the car remains in superlative condition. While adding just over 900 miles in 16 years, the owner has treated the car much like a piece of art, ensuring it is ready to be enjoyed by its new custodian. They note that the car has been meticulously cleaned while carefully preserving the factory-applied Cosmoline. Also, practically all of the factory labels, decals, tags and date-coded components are intact, and the seller reports the convertible top was exercised on a regular schedule to ensure it functions properly. During periods of storage, the car was regularly serviced and the fuel drained and replaced to prevent corrosion and spoilage while being stored in a temperature and humidity-controlled garage with the rest of the consignor's car collection.
Accompanying items include the factory tool roll, air pump, owner's manual, and stamped service booklet. The car will include the Porsche Production Specifications certificate confirming its desirable original specification and matching-numbers engine and transmission.
Cars of the 1980s are becoming more collectible by the day, and in our book, it doesn't get more '80s than a bright red 911 Turbo Slantnose Cabriolet. The beneficiary of meticulous care by a passionate enthusiast for the past decade and a half, this is an exceptional opportunity to add one of the finest examples of this coveted 911 model to your collection.
