THE JAGUAR E-TYPE

Introduced in 1961, the Jaguar E-Type caused a sensation when it appeared, with stunning lines, a twin-cam 3.8-liter inline six, and a stonking 150 mph top speed. Nowadays, it seems unimaginable that a single model could cause such a stir, but here was a civilized production sports car that looked like a Le Mans prototype and could outperform just about anything else on the road – while priced considerably less than a comparable Ferrari or Aston Martin.

Jaguar made the first significant upgrade in October 1964 with the launch of the 4.2-liter version. While outward changes were minimal, the mechanical spec was improved thanks to a bigger, torquier engine, a vastly more user-friendly gearbox and more powerful servo brakes. From September 1968, major visual changes to the E-Type came with the Series II. Evolving safety regulations necessitated the changes, and Jaguar took advantage of the opportunity to refine the E-Type further. The deash got new switchgear and the seats improved with more adjustability. The exterior got revised lighting, a full-width rear bumper, and new wheel lugs. While the Series II lived in the shadow of its older siblings for many years, it is finally being recognized by enthusiasts as the driver's choice- with all the dynamic performance of the Series I, enhanced by select refinements to improve comfort.

THE CAR OFFERED

This Jaguar E-Type Series II 4.2-Liter Roadster was completed at the Browns Lane Jaguar factory during August of 1970, presumably as a 1971 model-year car. The comprehensive history file offered with this elegant Jaguar E-Type Roadster contains hundreds of receipts of professional restoration work, service and maintenance performed on the car, dating back to the 1990s. A new interior and convertible top - manufactured by OSJI and fitted by Goodwin interiors of Reno, NV - was fitted around 2014. The Jaguar specialists at XKs Unlimited of San Louis Obispo, California carried out various mechanical work on the car around the same time, of which there are receipts for more than $18,000.

Although no serial numbers appear visible on the engine, it carries the 4.2-Liter casting marks as would be correct for this year and model. The Zenith-Stromberg carburetors originally fitted have been substituted for the desirable triple SU carburetor set up, as seen on earlier E-Type models, which free up some power and enhance flexibility throughout the rev range. Finished in elegant Old English White over a dark blue interior with matching carpets, the Jaguar has a lovely look. A classic wood-rimmed steering wheel is fitted, matched by a wooden gear knob. In addition to the aforementioned history file, various marque books and workshop manuals are accompanying the sale of the car. With good looks and plenty of power on tap, this is an eminently usable Jaguar E-Type Roadster ideal high-speed touring on events like the Copperstate 1000.
