THE CAR OFFERED

While it gets the credit for kicking off the Detroit muscle car wars in 1964, in many ways, the best GTO came along with the 1968 redesign. Attractively styled with an all-new rounded, muscular design, the all-new for 1968 GTO featured distinct hidden headlamps neatly integrated into the "Endura Bumper" front end, a new full-perimeter chassis, and a range of powerful new engines and option packages. The following year, the famous 'The Judge' package hit showrooms, its nickname lifted from a comedy routine seen on Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In television show. Initially conceived as a stripped-out GTO to compete with the Plymouth Road Runner, the Judge ended up costing $332 above standard car. It featured a 400 cubic-inch Ram Air III engine rated for 366 horsepower, a Hurst T-Handle shifter, painted wheels without trim rings, special badging and stripes.

This example from the Golden State Muscle Car Collection is a genuine 1969 GTO per the chassis number and trim tag, which is said to have been later dressed in The Judge trim and decals as part of its restoration. The trim tag does confirm this as an original Midnight Green car, and while it left the factory with a green interior, it has subsequently been restored in black vinyl. Powered by a 400ci V8, it features Ram Air III intake, Ram Air hood with exterior tachometer, and proper Judge-spec painted wheels.

Inside, there are bucket seats, a floor-mounted 4-speed with Hurst T-handle. A factory AM radio is paired with a factory 8-Track player, and other details include a 3-spoke steering wheel and the pull-cable to operate the Ram Air intake.

Attractive and well detailed, this GTO Convertible is a fast, fun example that's ready for top-down, tire-burning fun.
