THE CAR OFFERED
Since the mid-1960s, Oldsmobile's take on the muscle car came in the form of the intermediate-sized 4-4-2. In 1964, Olds was locked in competition with Pontiac and were eager to enhance their image, so they boosted the popular Cutlass with a warmed-over 330ci V8, heavy duty suspension, dual-exhaust, and a four-speed Muncie gearbox. Through the years, the 4-4-2 (or '442') grew in size, displacement, and power to become a major player in the muscle car wars.
This 1970 Olds 442 Convertible from the Golden State Muscle Collection has been extensively restored and comprehensively modified in the 'pro-touring' style. According to the consignors, this car was built for Holley, and used in their Holley Performance Fleet to promote their then-new electronic fuel injection system, which is featured on a Pat Musi-built big block. Standard displacement for the '70 442 was 455 cubic inches, and while documentation does not reveal the exact specs of this engine, it undoubtedly makes considerably more grunt than the standard car. It features Holley fuel injection, of course, and sends power rearward through an updated TH400 automatic transmission.
Well-appointed for touring, this Olds features an updated Custom Autosound stereo with trunk-mounted CD changer, Vintage Air air-conditioning system, a Griffin alloy radiator, four-wheel disc brakes, and stainless exhaust. Exterior modifications are tastefully understated, the red body accented with factory-style black stripes and staggered Halibrand billet wheels. Retaining its original character, but boasting massive performance and improved refinement, this unique Oldsmobile 442 is the perfect machine to drop the top and chew up the miles with ease.
