THE SILVER CLOUD II

Catering for the stately limousine market in the 1950s, Rolls-Royce offered Phantom IV strictly to Royalty and Heads of State, and the generally available Silver Wraith for all other comers. Following the introduction of the Silver Cloud, a long-wheelbase version of this more modern design was made available, with body styling closely following the factory's standard offering. Four inches (100mm) longer in the wheelbase than the standard saloon and sometimes fitted out with an internal division, these bodyshells were extended by Rolls-Royce's in-house coachbuilder Park Ward (soon to become H J Mulliner, Park Ward) at its London works and finished off at Crewe. These long-wheelbase versions of the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud and Bentley 'S' Series continued after the introduction of the new 6,230cc aluminum-alloy V8 engine on the 'Cloud II/S2 in the autumn of 1959, offering a less expensive, but hardly less exclusive, alternative to the newly introduced Phantom V. Only 258 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud II and 51 Bentley S2 long-wheelbase saloons were made before the introduction of the Silver Cloud III.

THE CAR OFFERED

This handsome Silver Cloud II is one of just 127 left-drive Long Wheelbase saloons, and additionally features a factory divider window. Factory records on file provided by the Rolls Royce Foundation in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, reveal this car, chassis LLCC83, was completed to USA specifications and delivered to Canada. In the Great White North, it was put into service by the British High Commission in Ottawa, Ontario, which would explain its formal options noted on the chassis card – such as the divider window, electric windows, and a 15-inch flagstaff. Along the way, it was refinished from its original Burgundy to white, which is over a light tan leather interior.

Following its use by the High Commission, the Silver Cloud was sold into private hands. From at least 1978 through 1989, it was with RROC member Mel Seck of Chatsworth, California. It eventually joined an extensive collection of Rolls-Royce and Bentley cars, where it was on static display for an extended time, and thusly will require recommissioning. Now back in the USA, LLCC83 remains a tidy, driver-quality example that can be enjoyed with minor mechanical attention, or further detailed to elevate it to a higher level. Boasting rare configuration and equipment, this Long Wheelbase Cloud II is a fine example with an intriguing history.
