THE R107 SERIES SL ROADSTERS

When Mercedes-Benz redesigned its famed SL in 1971, there was a lot of equity behind it. After all, when the incomparable 300 SL Coupe and Roadster were built fewer than 20 years before, they set the automotive world alight. The R113-series 230/250/280SL redefined the luxury roadster market with its unrivaled levels of refinement, luxury, and quality. For its latest iteration of the SL, Mercedes started with the chassis of the mid-size W114/115 model and sourced engines from the large W116 S-Class. The result was a luxurious V8 Convertible with continent-crushing performance wrapped in a timeless, crisp design that went on to become the longest-running passenger car series ever produced by Mercedes-Benz to date.

But even with the V8 engine, some clients felt the R107 could do with a bit more excitement. For those clients with the necessary resources, tuning house AMG would gladly upfit any Mercedes-Benz to address any perceived shortcomings. AMG could transform the SL from boulevardier to a true sports roadster with greatly improved power, handling dynamics, and a full complement of attention-grabbing cosmetic addenda. Each car specified by an AMG customer was bespoke, with à-la-carte options offered from the company's expansive catalogue.

THE CAR OFFERED

Presented in its striking original shade of Anthracite Grey over Crème Beige leather interior, this outstanding 500SL is a European specification model that was reportedly tuned in period by AMG and imported to the USA when new. Known in AMG circles as the "RJM Burgess" car, it was reportedly delivered new to a buyer in Florida before spending time in New Hampshire and New York.

Built for luxurious high-performance, this SL features the renowned 5-liter M117 V8 engine with an AMG Tuning Kit boosting power to a reported 276bhp. Additionally, this car was converted to a Getrag close-ratio 5-speed manual by AMG and is said to be one of just 5 surviving on our shores. Handling is assured via the limited-slip differential and AMG handling kit. Completing the treatment is a set of fantastic color-matched AMG Penta alloys, along with AMG spoilers and side skirts. The interior is trimmed in beige leather, as original, but is updated with delectable period-correct Recaro C sport seats – upholstered to match and in beautiful order. Additional equipment per the data card includes automatic climate control, ABS brakes, cruise control, removable hardtop, and a Becker Mexico cassette stereo.

Meticulously kept, benefiting from recent specialist service, and displaying a believed genuine 120,000 kms from new, this fantastic Mercedes-Benz blends the practicality and style of the R107, with desirable AMG performance parts. With pre-merger AMG cars garnering ever-growing attention from collectors, this fantastic SL roadster is sure to turn heads wherever it takes you.
