The Porsche 911 went on sale in 1964, replacing the 356 which had built the new company's reputation as the creator of some of the most beautiful sports cars in the world. The iconic 911 only served to better its reputation, both on road and on racetrack.
The first of countless improvements took place in 1966, with the launch of the 911S. Easily recognisable with its well-known Fuchs alloy wheel rims, the S was equipped with a significantly overhauled engine, producing 158bhp, some 30 more than the basic version. Taken together, this allowed the 911 to reach speeds of 140mph. An extended wheelbase introduced in 1969 improved the 911's sometimes capricious manoeuvrability, then for the 1970 model, the engine's capacity was increased for the first time, to 2.2 litres. Henceforth, it produced 178bhp on the S versions, with Bosch mechanical injection.
Two years after the launch of the coupé, a convertible 911, the "Targa", was presented in 1966, named in honour of one of Porsche's many victories in the classic Sicilian race. American legislation, which was tough on safety, had incited Porsche to explore an ingenious approach to the cabriolet. The Targa had a robust roll-over structure to protect its occupants in the event of an accident, as well as removable roof and rear window sections that could be kept in its boot. For 1969, a fixed rear window, with less noise and reduced leaks, replaced the rear hood. In this form, the very popular Targa continued its career until the 1990s, sharing countless mechanical and stylistic developments over the course of its life.

This Porsche 911 2.2 S Targa was delivered to Dr Matt. Matthews on 1 December 1969 via the Gateway Porsche Audi dealership in Portland, Oregon. Painted metallic grey 8010 and with black 68 perforated leather upholstery, it also had a Blaupunkt Frankfurt 453 radio. Dr Matthews seems to have driven his 911 Targa regularly, including for ski trips, as confirmed by an invoice dated 2 December 1970 for a Targa ski rack purchased from Gateway. The 911 was then subject to regular maintenance, invariably at Porsche Portland, until the 1980s. It was then maintained by various Porsche specialists in Portland, such as Precision Motor Cars or Marque Motors. We have many invoices on record up to 1994, when Matt Matthews parted with his car, to the benefit of Travis E Smith, again in Portland. The 911 then had around 142,000 miles on the clock.
Later, in 2008, the Porsche was purchased from Frank Parli of Texas by Pascal Dro, editor-in-chief of the specialist magazine Ferdinand. Now in France and with around 153,000 miles on the clock, the 911's engine was fully overhauled in 2009, including the replacement of valves, sealing rings, the chain and the bearings. In 2010, the gearbox was restored and various fittings were replaced to perfect the car's look, including the front grills, headlights, sidelights and various exterior seals.
The Porsche was purchased by its current owner in 2011, at around 155,100 miles. The fuel tank was then replaced with a new one due to a small leak. It has since been maintained by DMA, a Porsche specialist in Nanterre.
With 155,611 miles on the clock at the time of writing this catalogue, this 911 2.2 S Targa appears to be a highly authentic car. It still has its original interior, which has gained an elegant patina. Its targa top, restored in 2010, is also in good condition. Its coachwork, with paintwork dating to 1987, still presents well. Above all, it is a car that has been well maintained mechanically. We were able to test drive it and to ascertain that its engine and gearbox are both in good working order. Furthermore, the steering and suspension do not show signs of slack or excessive wear.
It is therefore a rare example of a 911 2.2 S Targa maintained throughout its lifetime, as attested to by a substantial file of invoices dating from 1970 to today. What is more, the car offered for sale has matching numbers and colours, including chassis, engine and gearbox numbers, which have been confirmed by Porsche. In addition to the invoices, it will be sold with its French registration document (carte grise), its Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, its original owner's manual in its sleeve, its toolkit, its spare wheel and its jack.
