M.A.S.E (Manufacture d'Automobiles, Outillage et Cycles de Saint-Étienne) was founded in 1921 at 13 rue Praire, with capital of 520,000 francs, its objectives being the sale of motor vehicles and accessories, cycles, engines and tools. The company had been founded by René Le Grain-Eiffel, grandson of Gustave Eiffel, builder of the eponymous Parisian tower, and designer Nemorin Causan. Its first product was a quality light car powered by an engine of its own manufacture. According to the Beaulieu Encyclopedia: "Attractive bodies, either coupés or pointed-tail sports coachwork, were made by Desfilhes of Montbrison." Despite a new C.I.M.E. engine and improvements to the transmission, sales remained disappointing and the company closed it doors at the end of 1924.

This 1922 model was raced by a driver named Barbier at Mont Ventoux that same year, finishing 1st in class and 3rd overall. M.A.S.E. brought two cars to this race, both of which broke down during practice. Barbier and co-driver Eric Michel Rey rebuilt one during the night and were ready for the race. Barbier did not know the road and Rey used his elbow to indicate the upcoming turns. The pair covered the 21km race distance in 23 minutes and 6 seconds.

Before WW2, M.A.S.E. gave three cars to a Monsieur Boulet, one of its engineers, in lieu of payment. During the war, the cars were stored in Mr Boulet's barn. Removed from the barn in 1965, this car was purchased that same year by Jacques Lefranc, who raced it at the Mont Ventoux Course de Côte in 1972. Lefranc also drove the M.A.S.E. at Montlhéry in 1973 and the car was pictured in Le Fanatique de l'Automobile. Marc Blanc bought it during the 1980s.

In 2011, the car was exhibited at Pierre Delliere's Musée Automobile de Provence in Orgon (who registered it in 2015) and that same year was driven on the Condorcet Rallye Cyclecars. The engine was comprehensively rebuilt in 2014 and a driveshaft joint repaired in 2015. In 2022 the M.A.S.E took part in the Vintage Revival at Montlhéry. Road legal and sold with a crossed French title, this charming and ultra-rare French sports car is eligible for numerous Vintage-era and pre-war events. The car is sold with a file containing numerous historical documents and pictures and is certain to be a welcome entrant at numerous events where it is guaranteed to attract lots of attention..
