"1947. The war is over and FIAT introduces on the market the 1100 S sports coupé, directly descended from the pre-war 508 C MM. The engine was considerably improved and maximum power output approached 51bhp.
"In styling it recalled the pre-war aerodynamic 2-seater coupé with post-war touches." - All The FIATs, Domus Books.

Capitalising on the considerable success of its first Competizione coupé on the 1100 chassis - the 508 C Mille Miglia of 1937 - FIAT introduced the 1100 S in 1947. The newcomer had a formidable reputation to live up to, its predecessor having made a stunning Mille Miglia debut in 1938 when, driven by Piero Taruffi, it won its class in that grueling 1,000-mile event at an average speed of 112km/h (69.59mph), a stupendous achievement at the time for a small-capacity production-based car. Its 1100 S replacement did not disappoint, filling five of the top 10 places in the 1947 event and finishing 2nd and 3rd overall in 1948, winning its class in the process. Only a few hundred were built up to 1950, many of them bodied by independent coachbuilders, though one of the most fascinating bodies was offered by FIAT's own 'Carrozzerie Speciali' division.
For the top-of-the-range model, the 1100 Sport Berlinetta, a more powerful engine was specified, incorporating shell-type plain bearings and an oil cooler for improved reliability. The four-cylinder 1,089cc engine produced 51bhp at 5,200rpm and, thanks to its aerodynamically efficient body, the 1100 S could reach a top speed of 150km/h (93mph). The lightened chassis carried a streamlined lightweight all-alloy body, and boasted alloy trim and lightweight bucket seats.

A FIAT 1100 Sport Berlinetta 'Mille Miglia' from 1948, the remarkable example offered here has an extensive racing history. According to the Archivio Storico FIAT, this car was built on 21st September 1948 with 'Carrozzerie Speciali' coachwork, the latter known by the sobriquet 'Gobbone' (hunchback) on account of its unusual shape. The car left the factory finished in Verde (green) and retains its original engine.
In 1953, Mr Faustino Campostella and Mr Collini participated with this car in the Mille Miglia, finishing 180th overall and 9th in class. A year later, Campostella entered the Giro di Sicilia, Mille Miglia and Coppa d'Oro Delle Dolomiti, while in 1955, Campostella and Collini participated in and finished the Mille Miglia for the third time in a row: all impressive results, considering the car was already five years old when it participated in its first Mille Miglia. The car's in-period racing history is as follows:
1953 XX Mille Miglia #330 Campostella/Collini. Result: 9th in class and 180th overall
1954 Giro di Sicilia #236 Campostella. Result: 5th in class and 42th overall
1954 XXI Mille Miglia #357 Campostella/Collini. Result: 11th in class and 129th overall
1954 Coppa d'Oro Delle Dolomiti #69 Campostella. Result: 5th in class and 50th overall
1955 XXII Mille Miglia #516 Campostella/Collini. Result: 7th in class and 144th overall

Having spent its life in Italy, the FIAT was acquired by a new owner in 2017. The gearbox had been rebuilt in Italy in 2018 and the car was extensively prepared for participating in the Mille Miglia again. After participating in the 2019 Mille Miglia Storica and Red Cross Rally (NL), the car was sold in 2020 to its current Dutch owner, who has spent an impressive €60,000 on it over the last three years. Works undertaken included renewing the interior and attending to many smaller details. The result is a lightweight streamlined Berlinetta in remarkably well prepared condition, which is only offered for sale due to the acquisition of another car for the collection.
This FIAT 1100 S is, of course, included in the Registro Mille Miglia as an original participant. The car comes with a substantial history file containing all the appropriate FIVA papers and a Dutch (EEC) registration document. A FIAT 1100 S Berlinetta is a very rare car and one for one with such an important history as this example to be offered for sale is a rare event indeed.

» - All The Fiats, Domus Books.

1953 XXe Mille Miglia n°330 Campostella/Collini. 9e de la classe et 180e au classement général
1954 Giro di Sicilia n°236 Campostella. 5e de la classe et 42e au classement général
1954 XXIe Mille Miglia n°357 Campostella/Collini. 11e de la classe et 129e au classement général
1954 Coppa d'Oro Delle Dolomiti n°69 Campostella. 5e de la classe et 50e au classement général
1955 XXIIe Mille Miglia n°516 Campostella/Collini.
