• Ultra-rare Abarth Gran Turismo
• One of only a believed 28 Spiders produced
• Coachbuilt Italian style
• Eligible for a wide variety of the most prestigious events

An innovative concern with a sporting pedigree second to none, Abarth branched out from producing induction and exhaust systems into selling performance kits for - mainly FIAT - production cars, later building a succession of aerodynamically stylish sports prototypes and limited-series production cars, many of which were produced in conjunction with Carrozzeria Zagato.

Another of Carlo Abarth's close collaborators was Carrozzeria Allemano. The latter had been founded in Turin in 1928 by Serafino Allemano, specialising at first in the repair of cars before switching exclusively to design work in the mid-1930s. After WW2 Serafino's nephew Mario joined the firm, which by 1950 had become renowned for its championing of modern, forward-looking styling themes typical of the 'Jet Age'.

Allemano was one of the styling firms that worked on Abarth's six-cylinder 2200 and 2400 models, which, like many of its products, were based on FIAT chassis. The 2200 was launched towards the end of 1959, its favourable reception prompting FIAT to develop its own 2300 Coupé, the latter bodied by Carrozzeria Ghia. Abarth assisted in developing the mechanicals of FIAT's 2300 while continuing to build its own 2200 and 2400 models in limited numbers. Abarth's 2200 and FIAT's 2300 S both had power outputs of around 135bhp, but the Abarth was considerably lighter than the FIAT courtesy of its aluminium coachwork (the Ghia bodies were steel) and enjoyed a superior performance. A period article in the eminent Italian motoring magazine Quattroruote reported a top speed of 187km/h (116mph), a highly respectable achievement in 1959. However, when the FIAT arrived it undercut the Abarth by over 700,000 lire and only a few dozen of the 2200/2400 had been built when production ceased in the early 1960s.

One of only a believed 28 Spiders produced, this car presents beautifully in classic Italian red with a contrasting black leather interior. The attention to detail on this very rare coachbuilt Abarth is truly outstanding; notable features include a well stocked dashboard with no fewer than six Jaeger instruments; a four-headlight front end (interestingly, these had been made legal in Italy only very shortly before the model's introduction); a lightened bonnet frame; and triple Weber carburettors.

This car had been comprehensively restored in its native Italy before joining the vendor's private collection in 2015. During his ownership he has addressed a number of minor issues and as a result this extremely rare Abarth Gran Turismo now ticks all the boxes and is certain to attract favourable attention at the many events it is eligible for. The car is offered with cancelled Italian registration documents and an ASI certificate and plaque.

• Rarissime Abarth Gran Turismo
