1958 Zündapp Janus 250 Saloon

1958 Zündapp Janus 250 Saloon
Chassis no. 0W5647

• Extremely rare and unusual microcar
• Bare-metal restoration by the Janus car club
• Successful participant in the 2018 Liège-Brescia-Liège Microcar Rally
• Registered in the EU, in Ireland

After WW2, Claude Dornier designed and developed a four-seater car, where the two front and two rear passengers sat back to back, making optimal use of the cabin space. Dornier licensed Zündapp to produce and market the car, which they further developed. Doors were located at front and rear, while the 245cc single-cylinder two-stroke engine was mounted between the two rows of seats, which could be folded down to provide sleeping space for two. The front suspension was of the leading arm-type and there were swing axles at the rear. The name 'Janus' was chosen after the Roman god who faced in two directions. Options included a sun visor for both directions, sunroof, heater, and two-tone paint. Total Janus production amounted to a little under 7,000 cars.

Our vendor spent 15 years trying to add one of these to his collection. Eventually he was able to commission the Zundapp Janus car club in Germany to totally restore this example from bare metal, reusing all the original parts. Undertaken over a nine-month period, the result is magnificent and the car is exactly as it left the factory in 1958.

In 2018 our vendor entered this Janus in the 60th Anniversary Liège-Breschia-Liège Micro Car Rally, run over a course of almost 3,000 kilometres. The car received a 2nd-in-class award at the finish (trophy included). Significantly, in the original 1958 Liège-Breschia-Liège the Zündapps won the team award.

Accompanying documentation includes an EU Irish registration certificate; owner's manual; workshop repair manual; spare parts manual; and a comprehensive photographic record of the restoration.
