1960 Goggomobil Dart 400 Sports

1960 Goggomobil Dart 400 Sports
Chassis no. 01147138

• Ultra-rare sporting microcar
• One of an estimated 50 survivors
• Fully restored in Europe in 2019
• Registered in the EU, in Ireland

Launched in 1959, the Goggomobil Dart was considered one of the most attractive and streamlined sporting microcars of its time. The Dart was developed in Australia by Bill Buckle's Buckle Motors Ltd of Sydney and produced from 1959 to 1961. Goggomobil rolling chassis were built in Germany by Hans Glas GmbH and shipped to Australia where the glassfibre two-seater open body (without doors) was made and the cars assembled by Buckle. The Dart was 3.0m long and 1.3m wide, and weighed only 345kg (761lb), while the Goggomobil 392cc twin-cylinder two-stroke engine developed 18.5PS, which was good enough for a top speed of 104km/h (65mph).

This beautiful and extremely rare Goggomobil Dart was acquired in Holland following a 20-year search by our vendor. It has been professionally restored and is a magnificent example of this unique and much sought-after microcar, receiving numerous top awards in Classic Car shows. During the full restoration in Europe the shape was improved by removing the join on the bodyshell formed during the moulding process at the Australian factory. The car is said to drive well through all gears and to be very responsive.

On 8th September 2019 a documentary film was released entitled D'art, about an artist who paints paper planes (paper darts) using a Goggomobil Dart as the canvas. The movie was received with positive reviews, and was selected for the 2020 Melbourne Documentary Film Festival. Accompanying documentation consists of an EU registration certificate; original sales brochure; owner's manual; spares manual; repair manual; and a few photographs of the restoration.
