1967 Porsche 911 S 2.0-Litre 'SWB' Coupé Chassis no. 11800008 Engine no. 4080248
Now well into its sixth decade of production, the Porsche 911 defines its maker in way that few cars have: think 'Porsche' and you inevitably think '911'. Porsche's long-running and much loved sports car first appeared at the Frankfurt Show in September 1963, with deliveries commencing in 1964. The preceding Type 356's rear-engined layout was retained but the 911 switched to unitary construction for the bodyshell and dropped the 356's VW-based suspension in favour of a more modern McPherson strut and trailing arm arrangement. In its first incarnation, Porsche's single-overhead-camshaft, air-cooled flat six engine displaced 1,991cc and produced 130bhp; progressively enlarged and developed, it would eventually grow to more than 3.0 litres and, in turbo-charged form, put out well over 300 horsepower.
The first of countless upgrades to the perennial 911 came in 1966, two years after production had commenced, with the introduction of the 911 S. Easily distinguishable by its stylish Fuchs five-spoked alloy wheels, the 'S' featured a heavily revised engine producing 160bhp, and was capable of a top speed of 225km/h.
The Porsche 911 S offered here, chassis number '11800008', is one of the early, short-wheelbase type much favoured by the Historic rallying fraternity, as is the case with this example. Completed in July 1967, '11800008' is one of the very first to be built for the 1968 model year (the chassis range started at '1180001' and ran to '11801267'), and as an extremely early '68 model, still retains its predecessors' green instrument markings.
Originally finished in Polo Red with Pepita interior, chassis 11800008 was delivered new to Switzerland. According to the Porsche Kardex it was delivered with engine no. 4080028 and optional accessories that included the desirable five-speed gearbox; a radio antenna and loudspeaker; roof-mounted ski rack; and a Webasto heater. The Porsche subsequently moved from Switzerland to France, where it still resides today. Extensively restored around 2007, both mechanically as cosmetically, this car has been prepared for rallying and is equipped with chronometers, trip master, bucket seats, and a roll cage. Well prepared, it is fitted with a Hockenheim type short ratio 901 gearbox, limited slip differential and Bilstein shocks. It also features front and rear bonnet fasteners; SABELT harnesses; aviation grade brake hoses; an electrical circuit breaker; and a fire extinguisher. The correct type engine (901/02) installed carries the engine number 4080248 (just a couple of numbers away from the original matching engine) and is believed to have been installed early in its life.
In 2011 this SWB 911 belonged to Mme Marie Louis-Dreyfus before passing on to the previous owner, still residing in the Provence, France. In 2019 the car was dyno-tested by the current owner resulting in 158hp at 6700rpm (on the wheels) and 165N Torque at 5500rpm (outprint available). Bonhams can confirm the car drives very well with a nice sound from the torquey 2.0-litre engine.
The car is offered with a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity; two professional illustrated valuation reports (dated 2007 and 2013 respectively); French registration documents; and a substantial quantity of invoices for work carried out. An ideal gateway car for Historic rallying and possibly the earliest Porsche 911 S for the 1968 model year you will ever find...
