Footnotes

"For anyone wishing to give their Mercedes that extra personal touch, Mercedes-AMG GmbH has just the answers. The Daimler-Chrysler subsidiary offers the combined experience of Mercedes-Benz and AMG in the field of high-quality enhancements for Mercedes-Benz passenger cars and puts the emphasis firmly on individuality when creating the customer's dream Mercedes." - Mercedes-AMG GmbH.

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class of full-size saloons has been setting the standard for performance and luxury since its arrival in 1972 and continues as the German manufacturer's flagship to this day. A best seller around the world for several decades, the S-Class has debuted many innovative features and technologies and is now in its sixth – W223 – generation.

Finished in blue with white leather interior, the spectacular example offered here belongs to the penultimate edition of the series: the W222. Introduced in 2013, one of the W222's most interesting technologies was the active suspension's 'Magic Body Control' (MBC) system, which scans the road surface for potholes and other irregularities and adjusts the suspension settings accordingly. The W222 also boasted a bewildering range of power plant options, ranging from a China-only four-cylinder through various V6s (some hybrid) and a couple of V8s to the top-of-the range 6.0-litre twin-turbo V12. There was also a choice of diesels.

The car we offer is one of the exclusive and ultra-desirable models featuring numerous enhancements from AMG. Now the official performance division of Mercedes-Benz, AMG has a long history of producing high-performance derivatives of Mercedes' standard production vehicles, and these improved versions enjoy an enthusiastic following world-wide, with prominent figures of the motor sport, entertainment, sport and business communities being counted among aficionados.

The Mercedes-Benz S 65 AMG was built on the long-wheelbase chassis and powered by a performance-boosted version of the 6.0-litre twin-turbo V12 engine producing a mighty 621bhp and 1,000Nm of torque; an output sufficient to propel this generously appointed and necessarily weighty car to 100km/h (62mph) in a mere 4.2 seconds. All that power reached the rear wheels via AMG's seven-speed automatic transmission, while the MBC system's capabilities were further enhanced with 'crosswind stabilisation'. Other driver aids included ESP Dynamic Cornering Assist and AMG's speed-sensitive sports steering with variable ratio.

On the outside there were 'V12 BITURBO' badges to the wings and an 'S 65 AMG' badge on the boot lid, while the opulent interior was trimmed in nappa leather with an exclusive diamond pattern to the AMG sports seats and a choice of five colour schemes. There was, needless to say, an extensive range of extra-cost options to bump up the asking price still further. And talking of price, the S 65 AMG was one very expensive automobile. As Car & Driver observed: "That Mercedes-AMG charges $230,495 for the twelve-cylinder S65 sedan isn't beside the point. It is the point. It is the most money you can spend on an S-class sedan (the Mercedes-Maybach Pullman limousine excluded). This AMG model costs $30,800 more than even the Maybach-badged S650 using the same V-12 engine and $82,000 more than the eight-cylinder Mercedes-AMG S63. To a select few, considering either of those bargain S-class sedans represents unacceptably small thinking. It is for them that AMG builds the S65."

The customer for whom Mercedes-AMG built this particular S 65 must have had very deep pockets, as it was delivered with just about every conceivable 'extra' available; indeed, it would be much easier to list what it does not have (if anything) than what it does. No fewer than 108 items are listed on the accompanying specification sheet! The car's price when new was around €275,000.

Our car was delivered new in Germany and has belonged to the vendor (its second owner) since 2017. Always serviced by Mercedes-Benz (services up to date), it has covered 149,000 kilometres from new and is presented in immaculate condition, ready to enjoy. Offered with Belgian Carte Grise.
