1997 Porsche 993 Carrera 4S Coupé Chassis no. WP0ZZZ99ZVS314489
An important landmark in the Porsche 911's continuing development arrived for 1994 with introduction of the Type 993 version, destined to be the last to use the air-cooled engine that had been a distinguishing feature of the 911 since its introduction 30 years previously. Today the Type 993 is regarded by many as the most beautiful 911 of all. Over the years the 911 had received numerous aerodynamic and safety-inspired add-ons, diluting the purity of the original form; the Type 993's arrival marked a return to basic principles, being recognisably a 911 but one in which all functions had been harmoniously integrated in a truly outstanding example of modern automotive styling.
The range offered remained pretty much as before, comprising two- and four-wheel drive Carrera 2/4 models, the legendary Turbo, and the Cabriolet convertible, all powered by the latest 3.6-litre version of Porsche's perennial flat-six engine. Along with the sleeker bodywork came new multi-link rear suspension that improved both ride quality and roadholding, reducing the 911's characteristic lift-off oversteer. The 3.6-litre engine not only produced more power than before but made it available over a wider rev range thanks to 'Variocam' variable valve timing and variable-length air intakes. The Type 993 was also the first 911 to feature a six-speed gearbox.
The 1997 911 offered here is an example of the normally aspirated, four-wheel-drive Carrera 4S, which shared the Turbo's chassis, brakes, and more aggressive-looking body. This car was ordered new at the factory by the current owner's father. Only the owner and his wife ever drove the car, which was delivered new through Porsche Autocenter in Schoten, Belgium.
The Carrera 4S was ordered in the desirable colour combination of Schwarzmetallic (black metallic) with matching interior, and with numerous desirable Porsche Exclusive options including the Aerokit (front and rear spoilers) and the factory sunroof. This car was delivered new in June 1997 and, as a late Type 993 4S, has the white plated dials typical of the last examples.
The Porsche was first registered to the owner's company and was serviced for the first two years by Porsche Autocenter where it had been delivered new. By March 1999 this 4S had covered 30,000 kilometres. From 2000 onwards the car was always serviced by the official Porsche dealer RS Motors in Ingelmunster; its last service having been carried out in January 2023 at just over 162,000 kilometres following a long period of storage (invoice on file). These works included a major service and overhauls of the brakes and suspension plus four new tyres, etc.
We are advised that the Porsche was always meticulously maintained by its sole owner. The car has had a light overspray, but the first owner's widow confirms the car has never been damaged or has never had an accident. Of note are signs of slight corrosion on the lower edges of the (front and rear) windscreens, typical for this model.
These early 4S models of the last air-cooled 911 have always enjoyed 'instant classic' status and have become increasingly sought-after. This example, offered for sale by the original caring owner's family, is a great rarity.
The car comes with its original pouch and books (including the stamped service book); tool kit; Belgian registration documents in the first owner's name; invoice for €17,627 from the aforementioned official Porsche dealer; and a Certificate of Conformity.
