The origins of the Mercedes-Benz SL-Class - SL for Sport Leicht (Sport Light) - go back as far as 1954 when the German manufacturer introduced the legendary 300 SL. The latter was derived from a racing sports car never intended for series production, but Mercedes' US importer Max Hoffman was convinced the market existed for a high-performance street version that would appeal to wealthy enthusiasts. The rest, as they say, is history.

The car offered here belongs to the sixth (R231) generation of SL roadsters, produced from 2012 to 2020. Released in 2012, the R231 featured a retractable hardtop coupé body and was built mainly from aluminium, including the chassis. Engine options ranged from a 3.5-litre normally aspirated V6 via a twin-turbo 4.7-litre V8 to a twin-turbo 6.0-litre V12, all of which came with multi-speed automatic transmissions of various designs. As one would expect from a top-of-the-range Mercedes, just about every conceivable electronic driver aid was incorporated as standard, plus the thoughtful addition of a boot release operated by foot movement near the rear bumper.

As has become traditional over the years, there was also a performance-enhanced AMG version. Now the official performance division of Mercedes-Benz, AMG has a long history of producing high-performance derivatives of Mercedes・ standard production vehicles, and these improved versions enjoy an enthusiastic following world-wide, with prominent figures of the motor sport, entertainment, sport and business communities being counted among aficionados.

The range-topping SL 65 AMG used the 6.0-litre twin-turbo V12 producing 621bhp and 738ft/lb of torque, which reached the ground via AMG's Speedshift Plus 7G-TRONIC transmission. As its name suggests, the 45th Anniversary version was built to celebrate AMG's 45th birthday in 2012. Only 45 were made. Special features included 'One of 45' sill plates; Designo Graphite Green Magno paintwork; a twin-blade radiator grille; AMG-specific LED daytime driving lights; exterior carbon package; AMG sports exhaust system; AMG Performance Studio wheels; AMG Performance steering wheel; and exclusive interior trim in Grey Pearl/Ginger Beige leather.

Built for the Swiss market, this 45th Anniversary SL 65 AMG comes with a copy of the purchase receipt confirming payment of US$257,000 and listing its unparalleled specification in full. In addition to the features listed above, this car also has an AMG matt carbon-fibre engine cover; AMG ceramic high-performance composite brake system; and the panoramic vario roof with Magic Sky Control. Kept dry stored since acquisition and offered with copies of the manufacturer's certificate of conformity, this beautiful modern Mercedes will require recommissioning before further use.
