"This is a car that makes a Rolls-Royce Phantom or Bentley Mulsanne look positively mass-produced, and that will be the core of its appeal of the super-affluent who want exclusivity above anything else." – Autocar.

Having revived the long-dormant Lagonda brand in 2009 for an abortive SUV concept car, Aston Martin saw sense and a few years later applied it to something Lagonda enthusiasts everywhere thought far more appropriate: the Taraf.

Development was undertaken by Aston Martin's 'Q' division, which specialises in bespoke cars and customising existing models. The final full-size model was completed in January 2014, only eight months after the first studio sketches had been submitted. The Taraf was intended as an homage to William Towns' Lagonda 'Wedge', though its styling was very much mainstream, something that could not be said for its famous predecessor.

The Taraf utilised the Aston Martin VH Generation 3 chassis platform, as found in the Aston Martin DB9 and Rapide, but with a lengthened wheelbase. Almost all the additional wheelbase was taken up in providing extra legroom in the rear, which is where it was assumed the Taraf owner would spend most of his or her time. Borrowed from other Aston Martins, mainly the Rapide, the ultra-luxurious interior featured console-mounted push-button transmission controls; an infotainment system; Bang & Olufsen BeoSound 1,000W audio system; and premium leather upholstery.

Powering the Taraf was Aston's familiar 5.9-litre 48-valve V12 engine, the latter producing 533bhp and driving the rear wheels via a ZF eight-speed automatic Touchtronic III rear transaxle. Its makers claimed a 0–100km/h (0–62mph) time of 4.4 seconds for the Taraf and a maximum speed of 314km/h (195mph).

Aston Martin's target market was the Middle East and the prototype Lagonda was said to have clocked up some 14,000 miles (23,000 kilometres) of testing in temperatures of 30–50°C. The Taraf was subsequently unveiled at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show where its $1 million price tag occasioned as much comment as the car itself.

Production commenced in 2015, with Aston Martin stating that only 100 cars would be made, though that was later increased to 200. In the event only 120 had been delivered when production ceased towards the end of December 2016.

Appropriately enough, considering the model's original raison d'être, this Lagonda Taraf has formed part of an extensive private collection in the Middle East. It was specified and delivered new in Selene Bronze, with Sahara Tan leather interior. Kept on static display, with only 76km on the odometer, this ultra-rare and immensely desirable piece of motoring exotica will require re-commissioning before taking to the road. Accompanying documentation consists of a photocopy registration card and copies of build information.
