THE TRUCK OFFEREDThe success of the Ford car in the 'teens led to the development of a commercial truck chassis for the emerging market for motor trucks. Despite the wide-spread acceptance of motor cars in that era, the horse and wagon was still in heavy use in the commercial industry.
Ford developed the rugged TT (Ton Truck) with only a minor amount of modification form the basic Ford road car. The standard engine, ignition and cooling system were all employed. A more rugged and lengthened chassis was used in conjunction with a heavy duty worm drive rear axle. For much of production, it was sold as a chassis with a hood, cowl and fenders, but would later be offered as a complete truck.
The Ford TT offered here is an example of a chassis equipped with a truck body by one of the many specialists in period. It is configured as a Stake Bed truck with removable side 'gates' sitting behind a steel cabin. The origins of how the vehicle arrived in the collection are sadly lost to time, however it would almost certainly have been the prize of the day retrieved from a swapmeet somewhere around the country, and joined the many Fords that rest in this stable. Commercial TT's are rare survivors today and its condition provides the next owner with the chance to restore one of these coveted vehicles, or else make it a focal point of a diorama or suchlike in a collection.
