THE CORVETTE ZR1
The ZR1 was the most audacious Corvette to date when it debuted in 1990. As opposed to just being an engine option as were previous high-performance Corvettes, the ZR1 was a complete car with Corvette's first and only overhead cam engine - developed jointly with Lotus Cars in England - plus a wider body, special extra-wide Goodyear tires on the rear, and a special rear fascia with squared taillights.
Without question, the soul of the new ZR1 was its all-aluminum 32-valve quad overhead cam V8 that put out 375 bhp and 370 lb.-ft. of torque. It was an engineering masterpiece that would propel the ZR1 to 60 mph in just over four seconds and would register a top speed of 175 mph. The engine was co-developed by GM and Lotus and was built at a Mercury Marine plant in Stillwater, Oklahoma, a plant known for its precise aluminum machining capabilities.
The ZR1 was unveiled at the 1989 Geneva Auto Show. Soon after, the ZR1 owned the cover of virtually every magazine in the world, while pricing for the ZR1 turned out to be about $30,000 more than a Corvette coupe at approximately $62,675, setting a new record for a GM passenger car. The ZR1 enjoyed a five-year production run and was phased out in 1995.
THE MOTORCAR OFFERED
This extremely well-preserved Corvette ZR1 has covered a mere 11,000 miles since new at the time of cataloging and represents a unique opportunity to buy a single owner, carefully maintained 'King of the Hill' ZR1. This car was completed in the spring of 1990 as the 774th ZR1 built at the Bowling Green, Kentucky Corvette plant, having had its sophisticated, all-alloy 32-valve DOHC V8 engine assembled at the Stillwater, Oklahoma based engine plant. Finished in Polo Green Metallic over Saddle leather, it is one of only 102 ZR1s finished in that color scheme in 1990—representing under 3.5% of the total production that year.
Ordered new by Tom Ferrara through Vail Chevrolet in Harrison, New York, according to a copy of the original factory invoice, options included dual removable roof panels, electronic air conditioning, and the ZR1 package—the latter of which nearly doubled the MSRP to total $60,155. Corroborated by the clean CARFAX report on file, the ZR1 has remained with a Mr Ferrara since new and is offered with owner's manuals, window stick, build record, and ample paraphernalia. Regularly serviced by Arroway Chevrolet in Mt Kisco, New York, only 500 miles have been added since August of 2007. The terrific condition of this example is a testament to level the of care Mr. Ferrara bestowed to maintain and preserve this Corvette. With only a single since new, and with factory finishes intact throughout, this sparingly driven ZR1 is not to be missed.
