An important landmark in the Porsche 911's continuing development arrived for 1994 with introduction of the 993 version, destined to be the last to use the air-cooled engine that had been a distinguishing feature of the 911 since its introduction 30 years previously. An instant classic the moment it came out, the Type 993 is regarded by many as the most beautiful 911 of all.

Over the years the 911 had received numerous aerodynamic and safety-inspired add-ons, diluting the purity of the original form; the 993's arrival marked a return to basic principles, being recognisably a 911 but one in which all functions had been harmoniously integrated in a truly outstanding example of modern automotive styling. The range offered remained pretty much as before, comprising two- and four-wheel drive Carrera 2/4 models, the legendary Turbo, and the Cabriolet convertible, all powered by the latest 3.6-litre version of Porsche's perennial flat-six engine.

Along with the sleeker bodywork came new multi-link rear suspension that improved both ride quality and roadholding, reducing the 911's characteristic lift-off oversteer. The 3.6-litre engine not only produced more power than before but made it available over a wider rev range thanks to 'Variocam' variable valve timing and variable-length air intakes. The Type 993 was also the first 911 to feature a six-speed gearbox.

Delivered new in Germany in October 1995 as a 1996 model, this is a very early example of the desirable normally aspirated, four-wheel-drive Carrera 4S, which shared the Turbo's chassis, brakes, and more aggressive-looking body. An instant classic from the moment it came out, the 993 would be the last air-cooled 911 and the first 4S model of the expanding 911 family and is soon to be 30 years old. This car was ordered new in the much-loved Polar Silver with Night Blue interior – a very elegant colour combination – and was delivered new with some interesting factory options including the Motor Sound Package; Porsche CR31 RDW radio; a third brake light (then optional); Motorola 2200 telephone; soft ruffled leather; and heated seats left and right.

From Germany the car moved to Italy and later on to Belgium. Porsche maintained, the original service book is stamped on numerous occasions and some older invoices from Porsche official workshops are on file.

At the beginning of this year €12,000 was spent on the car (invoice on file), which is offered fresh from a major Porsche Classic service where another €18,000 was spent. Described by Porsche Zenter Roost, Luxemburg, as mechanically in impeccable condition, the Carrera 4S currently displays a total of just over 80,000 kilometres on the odometer and is ready to be enjoyed by its next custodian. This highly sought-after future classic is offered with its original books and pouch, Porsche Classic Technical Certificate (confirming matching numbers), cancelled Italian Libretto, Belgian 'demande d'immatriculation' and the aforementioned invoices for work carried out.
