In 1993 Mercedes-Benz introduced the limited edition 500GE, a V8-powered model that took the G-Wagen into Range Rover territory. There have been countless updates to the Type 463 since then and a host of special and limited edition variants released; first introduced as the Extreme-G concept car, the G500 4×4² as seen here is one such.
The positive response to the show car prompted Mercedes-Benz to press ahead with a production version, which was launched at the Geneva Motor Show. In production since 2015, the G500 4×4² combines the body of the long-wheelbase Mercedes G-Class with the hub-geared portal axles of the much larger Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG 6x6. In addition to greatly increased ground clearance, the G500 4×4² also has a much wider track than the regular G-Class models. Powered by a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 petrol engine producing 416bhp, the G500 4×4² stands out by combining Humvee-rivalling off-road potential with sports car performance and limousine-like levels of luxury.
The ultimate in off-road performance and luxury, this G500 4x4² was built in October 2016 and delivered to our vendor - a passionate Mercedes-Benz collector - in Belgium the following December, finished in the eye-catching colour scheme of Electric Beam Yellow with Designo Black leather interior. In October 2017, with just 5 kilometres recorded, the Mercedes was reconfigured for tax reasons, the rear seats being removed, which enabled the car to be reclassified as a lichte vracht (light truck). The conversion's related invoice (for €1,815) is on file and the original seats are included in the sale. It was not until April 2018 that the car was registered for the first time (in Belgium in the first owner's name). Since then the G-Class has remained on static display in the vendor's collection, always kept on charge (the registration plates were returned). Euro 6b compliant, the car comes complete with books and tools; Belgian registration documents; a copy of the manufacturer's Certificate of Conformity (CoC); and a more recent Wallonia CoC (lichte vracht).
